Gulls and Ducks generally do well together in this pond fronting the US Capitol building, but when Winter sets in and food is more scare (as well as tourists), there are more aggressive moves for the bread crumbs offered.

The ducks in this pond are mallards, both female (foreground) and male (attacking the gull) are visible.

Hi Robin

Very interesting animal behaviour you have captured here. It seems like the ducks are standing up well to the gulls that, in the bird world, can be well compared to the hyaenas of the mammal world. There is lots of action in the shot. The duck in the front seems to have her eyes fixed on you and are waiting for the next handful of crumbs rather to be bothered about the fracas in the back. By the lines on the water it looks like the male, in the centre of the shot, attacked the gull with such vigour that it almost capsized the female beside him while the gull apparently did not expect the assault. The two at the back also seems to be squaring up one another so a title like "Turmoil in the Duck pond" could have worked well here. It’s just a pity you did not ID the ducks or the gulls.

I think the composition worked fine. The colours are natural, the details are great and although you do not show us the exif file or the camera details it is clear that you achieved a brilliant DOF through a very small aperture since you achieved excellent focus throughout the complete range of the photo. The exposure levels and lighting control was well managed.
