I'm back from a wonderful trip to Australia and New Zealand - two of the most beautiful and delightful countries I have ever visited. Unfortunately I had an accident in NZ and did something to my knee and cannot walk. I hope to find out what I did to it next week when I can see an orthopedist. So, I will be posting some shots I took on vacation since I won't be taking pictures for a while. I hope to catch up on all I have missed very quickly since I can't do much more than sit at the computer :-)

Here is a Flying Fox or Fruit Bat shot in the Sydney Botanical Gardens. I couldn't believe how many there were hanging upside-down on the trees and how much noise they make. It was quite a fantastic sight.

Little Red Flying-fox

Family: Pteropodidae
Scientific name: Pteropus scapulatus

Where they roost:
On the branches of trees. They roost in groups, called camps, of up to many thousands of bats. They often share camps with other flying fox species.

What they eat:
They appear to favour the nectar and pollen of eucalypt blossom over other foods that make up their diet, such as other flowers and fruit. Orchards are raided sometimes when other food is limited.

Conservation threats:
Vulnerable to loss of feeding areas from forestry operations, clearing of native vegetation and land degradation from agriculture.

Other information:
They are important pollinators of tree species and fly further into inland Australia than other species following the flowering of eucalypts.

You've taken so many pictures at the tip of trees, it's incredible, now you photograph bats with perfection! In bright light and wonderful details. This one has a fantastic pose, it seems like it is holding a cape and saluting the assistance. Let us applaude your return! And take care of your knee,

Francine

Hello Jane,
Welcome back!
Ulla and I were there in Nov. 2005 and saw these Grey-headed Flying foxes in the Sydney Botanical Gdns. but you have managed to take a better shot of one than either of us did! This is technically excellent, in great side ligtingand well composed against a blue sky that must be similar to the Arizona one.
Thanks for sharing this fine reminder!
Ivan

Really neat shot Jane!!
You captured some great detail, I like how the wings resemble an unopened umbrella. His colors remind me of a woolly bear caterpillar.

This is why it is so important (note for others...) to keep looking in all directions. Most would run or miss this but you did it well!
