We had a bit of a lazy start to our second day in the Girraween National Park; this shot of a Silvereye was actually taken in the back garden of the Villa we were staying in. I soon realized trying to get one of these in full-flight was not going to happen, so I settled for one sitting in a camellia bush.

The Silvereye is a small bird with a conspicuous ring of white feathers around the eye, and belongs to a group of birds known as white-eyes. It shows interesting plumage variations across its range. The grey back and olive-green head and wings are found in birds through the east, while western birds have a uniformly olive-green back. Breeding birds of the east coast have yellow throats, pale buff flanks (side of the belly) and white on the undertail.

To complicate this, the birds in the east have regular migrations within Australia and may replace each other in their different areas for parts of the year. Birds in Western Australia have yellowish olive, rather than grey, backs.

They are more common in the south-east of Australia, but their range extends from Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, through the south and south-west to about Shark Bay, Western Australia. They are also found in Tasmania.

Silvereyes feed on insect prey and large amounts of fruit and nectar, making them occasional pests of commercial orchards. Birds are seen alone, in pairs or small flocks during the breeding season, but form large flocks in the winter months.

A pair will actively defend a small territory. The nest is a small, neatly woven cup of grasses, hair, and other fine vegetation, bound with spider web. It is placed in a horizontal tree fork up to 5m above the ground. The nest is constructed by both sexes, who both also incubate the bluish-green eggs. If conditions are suitable two to three clutches will be raised in a season.

Hallo Richard
Time is rather limited at the moment, but I could not pass without leaving a few words of appreciation for your posting. This is lovely image indeed, and in my opinion this would have been the perfect Mothers Day posting. Two beautiful subjects in one frame, one prettier than the other. The white patch around the eye and the granite coloured beak is very attractive and for me an unopened blossom is always an attraction. To me it always adds that special and finishing touch to an image. Thanks for sharing this lovely presentation.
Kind regards.
Anna

Hi Rick
Lovely shot, especially sitting on the camelia bush and you gotta love a shot you can just step outside your door for in the morning!
Lovely light and nice catchlight in the eye.
Cheers
Sue

Hello Richard,
A really good shot of a Silvereye, taken from a fine POV with good sharpness and well composed among the camelia flowers. I also like the composition against a superb neutral BG that shows the silvereye and flowers up well.
Thanks for sharing this beauty,
Regards, Ivan

A sweet scene Richard, with a cute bird and a beautiful camellia flower, both in good focus from a pleasant viewpoint. A fine composition indeed my friend.

Hello Rick,
Why strive to get it in flight when it is very beautiful like this!! Lovely capture in a fine composition. Great focus on the eye and fine details. Beautiful colours too against a fine soft background. The flowers are a bit OE but it doesn't disturb much. Well done!

Very pleasing composition, nice detail/DOF.
The flower/bird combo stands out well in your frame against the clean BG also. Perhaps a little bit bright..But it does have that "Sunny" look.

Hi Rick, very nice shot of this Silvereye. He's almost part of that bouquet, with a great colour match between him and the leaves of the plant. Very good exposure on this one with a nice bokeh seen in the background.

Thanks, John

Hi Richard,
Silver eyes..hmmm.i se them around here a lot, but my SX100 doesnot have the power to reach them with good results as they cannot be reached quite close.
This is a splendid cpature with details and a nice perch with great lighting.I like the muted BG that sets off the subject very well.
Well done.
