I took the rubbish out to the bin this morning and when I lifted up the lid I found this young lady sitting on top of the garbage. I’m not quite sure how long she had been in there but I could see the relief in her face when I picked her up and gently placed her back in the bushes.

I pretty sure this is a Hedge Grasshopper “valanga irregularis” there about 85mm in length, usually plain khaki, but spotted and banded variations do occur.

Nymphs are green, or have black and orange patterns.

They are pretty common and conspicuous in the Greater Brisbane Region. It thrives in well watered suburban gardens. Usually feeds on broad-leaved shrubs, such as acalypha and hibiscus, but can also damage palms.

Details:- Shot raw, converted to Jpeg, cropped slightly and reduced in size, sharpened after re-sizing for posting.

What a find in a garbage can, Richard!
This is a handsome looking species of Grasshoppers.
I like the colour of this species.
You have made a fine portrait of this one stuck in the can.
It was considerate of you to let it connect with its freedom.
Well done and thanks.

Hello Rick

An excellent close up of this hopper.
The eye detail is very good.
Great job on the DOF and POV.
The colours are well saturated.
This shade of yellow makes the hopper look quite nice.

Hi Rick,

She must have surprised you and the first thing you did was to grab your camera! You managed a great shot of this grasshopper. I love those eyes - great details really showing them off. I also think his legs are fascinating. Her face may not be beautiful but the yellow coloring is.

Hello Rick,
Nice to see an insect posting from you.
This is an excellent close-up of an Australian Hedge Grasshoper. You portray this yellowish version with fine detail of the head from a pleasing lateral POV.
TFS and have a good week,
Cheers
Ivan

Hi Rick,
i like the narrow DOF here, it draws the attention to where it needs to. Excellent detail and colours - i also like the frame you've put on too, really enhances the over all presentation.
