I found these little fellows in the garden this morning as my wife and I were trimming down the Hibiscus Tree.

These are called Cotton Harlequin Bugs, “Tectocoris diophthalmus” there length is about 15mm.

They have a rounded convex shape, and there colours vary from pale orange to as in this case heavily patterned metallic green, blue, and red.

The back of the insect is covered with an enlarged, shield like scutellum.

There habitat ranges from coastal dunes, rainforest, and my back garden, and are spread as far as New Guinea and some Pacific Islands.

Details, Shot Raw and converted to Jpeg, cropped slightly resized and sharpened before posting.

Hello Rick,
An excellent capture of a this Harlequin Bug nymph highway, the nymphs themselves shining shaply in their glory. The technical features and your use of the Canon 100mm macro are excellent. The composition is pleasing and it's interesting to notice that you chose to have the highway stem upside-down!
TFS this beauty,
Cheers,
Ivan

A pleasant diagonal composition in a vertical format Richard, those tiny but colourful pentatomids look so nice in your sharply focused and well exposed close up. TFS this fine image my friend.
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hi Rick,

A wonderful capture of these colorful bugs climbing up and down the branch. These Harlequins have the most beautiful irridescent colors. Excellent details of all of them. A wonderful vertical composition.

Hi Rick,
There is no chore for the likes of us in the garden ...because we would all find some thing or the other to photograph even as we do our work!!!And here is one you were lucky to find even as you went about trimming your hibiscus tree...this is a maco that has a nic fun element ...the composition with the group is quite a treat to watch. I also like your title...that is one highway for sure...Despite the slight distraction caused by the lighted BG, the metallic blue on the bugs outshined the BG making this a real fine capture. The vertical composition presents the scramble quite well and all the seven bugs completely in the frame are in very good focus.Quite tastefully composed.
Thanks much.
Cheers
Silpa
