I was going though my backup dives when I found this shot which I took at the end of June last year, it’s of a juvenile Brahminy Kite taken down at the Port of Brisbane wetlands.

The adult Brahminy Kite is unmistakable, though juveniles may be confused with the Whistling Kite (longer tail and distinctive under-wing pattern) or light Little Eagle. First-year juveniles may also be mistaken for Ospreys, but are dark underneath rather than white.

Its habitat is mainly coastal and in particularly it hangs around mangrove swamps and estuaries. It is also sometimes seen over forests and along rivers.

It feeds on carrion (dead animals), insects and fish. It swoops low over water, the ground or tree tops and snatches live prey or carrion from the surface.

It also very good at stealing from fish-hunting birds, snatching prey in flight. It harries or bothers other birds such as gulls, Whistling Kites, Osprey or Australian White Ibis.

Details, Shot Raw and converted to Jpeg, cropped slightly re-sized and re-sharpened for posting.

Hi Richard,
Beautiful in flight capture.Sharpness, details, framing and timing are excellent.
Thanks for posting.

A perfectly frozen in-flight capture of the Kite Richard, the faint movement in the BG resulted from your panning the camera during the take, I think. The finely illuminated flight feathers are sharply depicted and are in good detail. TFS this my friend.
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hi Richard,
This is a very good capture of this raptor in-flight! This is not an easy shot to do and you did great. Details, composition and exposure look good! I’m surprised that you could freeze the movement like this using 1/500 sec. You must have press the button at the good moment. I have tried similar shot yesterday but the bird that way too far from me; they are always too far :) Thanks,
Claudine

Rick,

Visiting your old photos is not a bad idea - just look at what you found! Very nice work mate. I can see you had the full sun coming straight down (or almost) but you've still managed to expose the wings well. Great job.

Best Regards,

Martin

You have captured a great shot of the flying Kite at SS 500, Richard. The details on its widespread wings are very sharp and clear.
Thanks a lot for your kind words on my completion of 3 years on TN.

Hi Rick,

Excellent composition and note, minor gripe is that there's a very visible white sharpening halo around almost the entire bird, what happened there? Looks like a bit too much sharpening to me.

John

Hi Rick,

I'm surprised you didn't post this picture sooner! A wonderful in-flight shot of this Brahminy Kite. Wonderful colors and sharp details of the face, body, wings, and tail feathers. He is in a lovely position as he flies by the blurred trees in the background. A lovely composition.
