I haven’t been down to the Port of Brisbane for a while now because the last couple of visits were very quite to say the least.

But I am glad to say things are picking up, the wetlands near Wynnum have flocks of Godwits and Black–winged Stilts arriving.

I caught this juvenile Striated Heron fishing in the mangroves yesterday morning.

Talk about patient this little fellow sat in the mangrove trees looking down at the water, not flinching at all for what felt like an age.

Then suddenly there was a splash of water and thankyou very much I have my breakfast, now your probably all wondering if I got the shot :0( sorry to say it all happened to quick.

Striated Heron’s are found around Australia's coastline from Broome through the Top End down the East Coast to Southern New South Wales.

It frequents mangroves, swamps, tidal estuaries and mudflats. Its diet is varied consisting of small aquatic creatures, insects, crustaceans and mud skippers.

Details; Shot aw and converted to Jpeg, cropped and re-sized, re-sharpened for posting.

Rick,

I guess the key to photography is patience and a key to photographing birds such as this one is to match its patience :) That is sure hard to do....
Anyways, even though you didn't snap the picture at the instant this bird went for the 'kill', you still ended up with a great shot. Very nicely done.
BTW, I guess a 400 and a x2 extender comes in handy in such cases. I could never get close enough to herons with my 300... They just fly away before I get a chance to do anything. Anyways, TFS!

Best Regards,

Martin

Hi Rick,

Great capture for both you and the heron. I love the pose on the branch as he shows off his fish. The details of his face and blowing wet feathers are wonderful. Nice natural colors of the bird. We can see just where he entered the water to catch his meal.

Jane

nice capture, TFS Ori

Hi Richard,
Outstanding shot and you have captured a fantastic moment here. That perch looks exclusive and perfect for fishing and the Straited Heron is having a fabulous time there. Very neat and sharp image with lovely colours and perfect lighting. The ripple in the water looks majestic. Excellent POV, DOF and composition.
TFS.

Hello Rick,
It seems that the Brisbane area is the right part of OZ to be in right now, what with floods in the N. and fires in the S.!
You made good use of the calmness by taking this excellent shot of a juvenile Striated Heron with its catch taken from an excellent POV, despite the branch, with great sharpness and lighting. Nice composition too.
TFS this fine capture,
Cheers,
Ivan

Hi Rick,

Nice composition, caught the bird at just the right moment. Very nice detail and composition.

Thanks,
John

Hello Richard,

It sounds to me as if you were as patient as the heron!
This is a delightful shot, (if not for the fish!) The details are very well captured from the fluffy texture of the feathers, to the tiny droplet of water falling from the fish.

The inclusion of the branch as a perch adds greatly to the compositional excellence of your shot.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

You pegged this one as quickly as it did same to its prey. Very good timing and an almost interactive enclosure which gives some reason to glance a bit more on...Very nicely done..
Bob

Cool shot Ron, would like to call this one mine :)
Great timing, right place, right time..
Haven't been down to the river here in a long time, there are green herons there..
Nicely done,
Howard
