Update 12/2/2009 This is in fact a Little Egret, many thanks Ivan for the correction.

This was also taken down at the Port of Brisbane wetlands on the same day as my previous post, and thank you to everyone who’s taken the time to stop by, it’s really appreciated.

The Little Egret's overall plumage is white, and is the only Egret to run around chasing its prey while feeding.

With dark grey-black legs, black bill and a bright yellow naked face. In the breeding season the plumage includes two ribbon-like head plumes, and abundant plumes on the back and breast.

The Little Egret is also called the Lesser Egret.

It is found mainly in coastal and inland areas of northern, eastern and south-eastern Australia. It is common on the north, uncommon in the south, and only a winter visitor to Tasmania. Little Egrets are also found widely in Africa, Europe, Asia and New Guinea.

It feeds on a wide variety of invertebrates, as well as fish and amphibians. It hunts in shallow water by shuffling a foot to stir up aquatic prey, which it then takes in a lightning-fast movement.

Details, Shot Raw converted to Jpeg, Cropped and resized, sharpened slightly for posting.

Hi Rick,

A beautiful Egret with it's landing gear down. Excellent timing to capture the wings in the V position. The details of the face and eye are excellent. She looks wonderful with the blue water background.

Hello Rick,
A fine capture from a great frontal POV with the wings in a V-shape of a Little Egret (Egretta garzetta)Taken with fine sharpness and composition above the water.
The black bill shows that this is neither the Great nor the Intermediate Egret.
TFS,
Cheers,
Ivan

Hello Rick,

A very nice shot of this attractive bird, caught it at just the right moment, and the image is nicely exposed, good and sharp. Looks like a bit of OOF vegetation in the foreground, a minor distraction, but it does give a feel for being out in the field, which is a good thing.

Olá Richard

Bela captura do pouso dessa ave bonita e exótica. Belas cores, um bonito trabalho, meus parbéns!

I like the composition, colour and sharpness, I am envious that you get the chance to take photos like this. My only nitpick is the OOF vegetation in the foreground, it bothers me because it almost looks like a stain on the photo - sorry just my opinion.

Hi Rick,
we have these here too and i love to watch them, they are very graceful birds. Excellent sharp focus and well handled exposure on those white feather. I gues you could have cropped out the OOF plants in the FG, but i think they add to sense of where you were shooting from. Nicely done mate.

Hello Richard,

Photographing birds with white plummage brings its own light difficulties but you have handled it very well.
Your pov has given the flight grace.
I'm not sure whether its legs are going up after take-off, or coming down for landing!

I think I would have cropped off a little more of the f/g distraction.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
