[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today, I visited the Brisbane Forest Park again. It is a lovely haven for wildlife and is an extensive bushland area to the north-west of Brisbane.

I find it challenging to shoot in low light and today's picture is not one of my best efforts. I selected AV Mode f4.0, set my ISO to 400, and the fastest shutter speed was still only 1/5 due to the light. The focal length was 85 mm and I did have a tripod.

The Rose Crowned Fruit Dove is a lovely coloured bird and I am glad to add him to my collection.

The Rose Crowned Fruit Dove is 25 cm long and has a small, rather dumpy body and is parrot-like. His back and wings are green, forehead rose-coloured with orange and yellow underbody. They live in rainforest, scrub, wet forest, riverine forest, edges of thick cover or wooded areas with an abundance of fruiting trees. They are widespread in wetter, forested parts of Greater Brisbane Region and are present all year, but less common in winter. They also live along the coastal areas of the east coast of Australia and in Northern Territory.

You certinaly had your work cut out on this shot, its never easy in low light conditions, having the time to set up the tripod is a (+) I proberly would have fired the flash to use as a fill, and if you have a cable release that would avoid any camera movement when releasing the shtter on slow speeds, the only other advice I can think of is may be useing the digital exposure compenseation or even bracketing the shots by 1/3rd or 1/2 a stop, as for the image itself yes it is a little soft, but what a stunning looking bird I never seen one before, amazing colours and really nicely framed. Really hope all this waffeling on makes some sence, all the best,

Hi Sue, I thought all Doves looked pretty much alike, with some variations on the grey. Obviously not, this guy has great colour. The shot is soft, you recognize that, I'm not sure what else to tell you. I think we all find it a challenge sometimes shooting in a forest, with dim light. I have lost a lot of shots, that I tried under similar conditions. I think when you're pushing it like this you pull out all the stops, so in this case, shooting with a Canon, you don't have as much noise to contend with so I would push it to ISO 800, and you might even try some shots underexposed, and bring them back with software, especially if you're shooting in RAW, there is still a lot of detail in the shadows that you can recover. The other thing is, even though you're using a tripod, you probably still want to use a cable release as just pushing that shutter can cause some shake. With focus, set this to spot, as opposed to some kind of matrix layout (not sure how it works on Canon), so you don't have any kind of interference from branches etc. Finally, I'm guessing this is a crop, which will make what is left look a lot softer. Sometimes when we can't get close enough, you just have to settle for the smaller size in the larger format. I have a couple like that, and I was still thrilled to get them.
