I took this from inside the hide down at the Port of Brisbane this “Intermediate Egret” was busy fishing almost in front of me, but as I started to shoot I think the noise from the camera spooked him and he decided to move on.

The Intermediate Egret has an orange or red bill and green facial skin, the plumage is white, with long lacy plumes arising from the upper breast and scapulars.

They occur throughout most of the world, and are common throughout Australia, with the exception of the most arid areas.

It feeds alone and mainly on molluscs, amphibians, aquatic insects, small reptiles, crustaceans and occasionally other small animals, but fish make up the bulk of its diet.

It usually hunts in water, wading through the shallows, or standing motionless before stabbing at prey. Birds have also been seen taking prey while in flight.

Details: Shot Raw converted to Jpeg, resized cropped and sharpened slightly for posting.

Beautiful capture! Nice pov wonderful detail love the informative note. TFs

Hi Rick,
very nice to see this photo and there have been a number of the larger water birds uploaded as of late. Here where I live I have not seen any of these birds about and I'm not sure if we have them. The lens you have used for this capture sure is a heavy one and I am wondering if you shot the photo hand held or used a tripod.I like the action of the bird's leap to flight and it is nicely focused with little motion blur. The colour is also natural looking. The water coming off the feet adds interest to the capture as well. That 2.8 lens must be great in dull light and it's use with an extender on the 1D mk III would probably work very well.My understanding is with a 2.8 lens you can have the full benefit of all the camera's focus points and hand held shooting will look very good as well. Thanks for giving us this view and the information contained in your note. Bob

Hi Richard,
This is an interesting Egret specie I didn’t see before. Your action shot is very well done with an interesting pose of the bird and the wings just a bit blurred suggesting the movement. The exposure is well chosen but the lighting was very difficult. I also use (-) compensation over the water but in this case, with the light from the front, I would probably tried a (0) or even (+1/3) to lighten the subject.
Regards, Mario

Hi Richard,
A very nice photo of a bird that I couldn't see one yet. Birds pose and framing is great.
TFS mate,
Fatih

A poetic capture Richard,
The diagonal "flowing motion" and the high shutter speed really make this a sensational composition. TFS indeed!
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hi Richard!
Wonderful capture with perfect timing. The photo is very "mobile" and thanks to that very unusual and original. It was not easy to take such picture I suppose, so bravo for very good DOF and sharpness.

Hello Richard! What a great moment you caught! Perfect timing, beautiful image and fantastic technique, well done!

Mario

Superb action shot, Richard.
With its feet just out of water and bent forward in a powerful thrust for take off, the Egret looks elegantly beautiful.
The background too has come out to be very natural in this picture.
TFS and regards.

Hello Rick,
The weed that had fastened on to the feet add an interesting aspect to this action shot of the Intermediate Egret taking off anf the lighting is great in helping to make the wings more obvious against the busy BG. The sharpness and composition are superb.
TFS this fine image,
Ivan

Hi Rick,
incredible shot, perfect sharp focus and timing, as well as an awesome composition...although points are really that significant, 24 doesn't really do this justice, well done!
Paul

Hello Rick,

What a wonderfully timed shot!
The elegant arch of its neck, the majestically opened wings and that delicate backward flip of the feet, all give this such movement!! I like how you have captured the water disturbance beneath its feet, too!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

hello Richard

excellent take off image of the Egret, excellent timing
your where at the right place too shoot it in photo,
fine POV and framing, excellent sharpness and details, TFS
