[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I came across this piece of driftwood whislt walking along the beach of Wineglass Bay in Tasmania (a wonderful spot on the fabulous Freycinet peninsula!) and was instantly attracted to the simple sculptural shape and the way it was placed naturally along the water's edge - it was a hazy sunny day meaning lovely soft shadows, and I took the shot trying to ensure I kept detail and texture in the sand, thinking it would work nicely in monochrome.

Post processing:

- Conversion to monochrome via channel mixer
- Slight curves tweak to enhance the grainy sand
- Slight contrast boost
- Resize
- Slight USM
- Border

I wish I had had my decent digicam at that point, it could have been much nicer quality, not quite as pin sharp as I like!

Hope you like it!

Hypnotizing perfect artwork ...
Post-processing totally under control !

excellent contrast and DOF.
I like the way the background mimics the direction of the branches, as if the wind shaped everthing.

Hello Doug
Very nice b&w shot,
Perfect composition,
I don't like the framing,
Excellent.

Fartash

Indeed - It looks very nice in b/w!
The contrast and simplicity makes this a great picture!
Very good detail in the sand, youve used channel mixer very well here!
Well spotted, and well executed!

Hi Doug,
Something a bit different from whats usualy seen here...I like it.A simple image but with powerful emotion...more of a feeling of solitude and loneliness in my opinion. The stark light and shadows adding to the emotion.Good work...well done.
Regards, David

Hello Doug, very nice shot. I like the use of B&W here, very suitable. I would clone out the light patch in the top right hand corner...I'm being picky there. Very good image. I'd love to see it with some longer shadows too. Well done.

Hi Doug,
Great B/W conversion. The driftwood has some really interesting and beautiful shapes. The gradient colors in the top part of the photo is very intersting, I assume its created by the water. I do agree with Paul about the white patch.

Hi Doug,
Nice simple compo B&W picture of this dead drifted tree. May need to reduce brightness slightly. Nicely done.

Hi Doug
I think the image looks great a bit softer than sharp. A great angle as well with the shadows in the foreground.
