[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The first St Andrew's cross spider (Argiope Keyserlingi)I have seen in my garden. This spider lay in the middle of its cross, typical for its kind. The web is a classic zig zag shape forming the cross in the centre. The silk (stabilimentum) attracts insects as it reflects UV light, the web takes on a white appearance depending on the angle of light hitting it. The purpose of the cross is unknown, ideas include a camouflage as the spider lays in the middle of it and a warning system to birds so they don’t fly through it.
