Hi

This morning as I was walking to work from the train station, I heard a lovely bird singing. It was hard to work out where the noise was coming from but I finally spotted this little fellow which I later learnt was a Figbird.

It was quite dark and it was hard to get a good angle through all the branches. My camera was set to Aperture mode 5.6 and I had to push the ISO up to 800 to get a shutter speed of 1/250. My lens was at 300mm. A lens with image stabilisation is on my wish list!

About the Figbird - The figbird (28-29 cm) lives in diverse habitats including rainforest edges, mangrove and paperbark swamp, eucalypt forest and woodland, orchard and tropical gardens. Figbirds are colonial, in small groups through breeding months when several nests may be in quite close proximity. After breeding they tend to congregate in larger flocks of 20-40, occasionally many more, these feeding in various fruiting trees, especially figs.

In the treetops they clamber about in parrot-like manner, clinging and hanging among foliage and twigs to reach ripe fruits, insects and nectar. They are present along coastal areas of NSW, Queensland and Northern Territory plus many subspecies exist in Indonesia and New Guinea.

Hi Sue, these guys love to hide in the tree among those branches. I saw one last year when I was up your way. This guy gave you a great clear pose though. Your technique worked, pushing it up to ISO 800. It seems to me that the Canon is a lot more forgiving with noise than the Nikon (at least with the 200D). Noise is not bad here, and you must have done some bracing, and holding your breath etc. because the shot doesn't show any camera shake. Well done on this rare bird.

Thanks, John

Hello Sue,
A fine capture of the green race of the Figbird with good sharpness, pose and taken from a good POV that shows the features well.
I couldn't get a good shot of this one,not as good as this when we were in NSW but got a better one of the yellow race in the north.
TFS this beauty,
Regards, Ivan

Good result for you Sue. Nice image given the inherent difficulties. Here is a link to Birds in Backyards, useful when looking for notes and calls
