This kookaburra was a regular visitor to our backyard for several months. He loved eating our cat's pet food (kangaroo mince). The cat kept well away from his large beak!
The sound of a kookaburra laugh is quintessentially Australian - it always makes me smile. Aboriginal legends say that the kookaburra's laugh every morning is a signal for the sky people to light the fire that lights and warms the earth.
The kookaburra is a member of the kingfisher family. Their diet consists mainly of snakes, lizards, rodents and sometimes other small birds but they also eat insects. They can live for 20 years or more. |

Hi Margaret,
I didn't know that kookaburra is a bird. I thought it was a cricket ball introduced by channel IX. Nonetheless, from the beak I knew it is a kingfisher & an elegant one. Suitably placed in it's own homely atmosphere.
regards,
Subhayan
