[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hi there, hope you are all having a lovely weekend. Today, I visited the Boondall Wetlands area which is on the northside of Brisbane. I was hoping to catch some butterflies with my Macro lens but I got lucky and saw this beautiful White-faced Heron. It was shot from quite a distance and has been cropped down quite a bit.

White-faced Herons (Egretta novaehollandiae) are also known as Blue Cranes. They are 70 cm long and are grey with a long neck and long legs. They have a white face, line of black spots down the middle of the throat, long rapier-like grey beak and have yellow legs.

In flight, their neck is usually pulled back and legs trail beyond their tail. Their underwing is grey and trailing edge is darker grey.

They have a awwk or croaking call, and may call in flight.

Their habitat is wetlands, lakes, dams, rivers, ponds, pasture, parks, fish ponds and gardens. In breeding season has long lanceolate plumes on nape, mantle and back, shorter plumes on lower fore-neck and breast.

White-faced Herons are found abundantly thoughout Australia in temporarily habitats.

I am always amused when I come back and write up my notes on the birds as my book tells me that they are all common, yet this is the first time I have seen a lot of them. Looks like I have lived the first half of my life with my eyes shut!

Hello Sue,
Though this has the signs of heavy cropping, the side lighting in this capture of a White-faced Heron is superb so that it shows up beautifully against the wetland BG.
This is what makes the image attractive and presumably why you shared it with us.

Hi Sue, I see it has been cropped a lot - you have lost a lot of the sharpness and details of the bird.
But the bird itself is good to see. It is a beauty.
I can agree with what you have said - I too have lived a lot of my life with my eyes shut! P.D. Like Pre-DIGITAL days!!

Well done on the pov here.I can never seem to approach the herons closely before they take off.
The details are very good,and the plumage shows well.
