This is a follow on from my previous shot I posted of the Brahminy Kite, as mentioned I watched this raptor take flight swoop down and grab a fish from the lake.

I have posted an approach shot in the workshop just prior to the Kite grabbing the fish, unfortunately I never managed to get the actual grab, in my excitement of seeing this happen in front of me for the first time I lost site of him though the viewfinder, and by the time I caught up it was heading back to a tree for a well earned meal.

Any advice in tracking a raptor in flight without losing it in the viewfinder would be greatly appreciated, missing out on the splash and grab shot was a bit of a disappointment to say the least, but still pretty pleased with the end result.

This was shot Raw and converted to Jpeg, cropped and reduced in size, sharpened slightly for posting.

Hi Richard,
Excellent action capture.Details and lighting on wings are beautiful.Well exposed and composed.Very well done!
Thanks for posting.

Richard, all I can offer is the advice I was given: pan and stay with it. I've done the exact same thing, then a friend of mine mentioned a tripod of a certain caliber on sale, and sure enough, he was right. I've noticed it has a quick spin and I'm able to go in any direction I need without thinking, and better yet, it's light - and durable.

As far as the photo goes, it's lovely. I love the spread of the wings, the swoop, if you will, and the minute details in his face.

It's also almost like his wing tips are fingers, especially the ones on the left that are splayed out like fingers. I understand why you did what you did to give him the catch - and the frustration of getting so excited the absolute shot you want is missed. As told to me by a great photographer - you'll be amazed at how vigilant you'll be from now on. I'd be surprised to find you missing too many more 'awesome' shots.

As dumb as it sounds, I practice panning with the light-weight tripod to make the shift easier. Practice, usage, and determination - you'll get there, but as for this lovely piece? A true heart-stopper.
