We stopped by a group of Royal Spoonbills (Platalia regia)in a wet meadow on our way back to Sydney from northern NSW. While taking this shot we noticed a Pacific Black Duck (Anas superciliosa)among them.

Royal Spoonbills are regarded as fairly common in Eastern Australia, while Pacific Black Ducks are abundant, like Mallards in Europe.

I don't think a shot of a Royal Spoonbill has been posted before on TN.

I took this shot on an overcast day at a distance of about 40 meters. Apart from cropping by about 50% and a little sharpening there was no other PP treatment.

Hi Ivan,

I love the title! I have never seen a Spoonbill and they look beautiful. The white against the grass background is most attractive. I love the composition of this shot.

Jane

well composed shot with nice point of view, the green grass makes a nice bg,

Hello Ivan , very funny title and good photo , whites slightly overexposure , TFS.

Hello Ivan,
An interesting caption to the picture, though, mercifully, there is no caste system in nature.
I also believe this is the first ever picture of Royal Spoonbills on TN. Don't remember having seen any so far.
Seen from that point of view too, this very pleasant picture turns into a landmark post for which you deserve to be congratulated.
Thanks and take care.

Hi Ivan

Unfortunately for you and my dear friend "Mr. Ram Thakur" this is not a TN first, but it is still very unique since it is only the second posting of this royal bird. The first was by Pam Russel (coasties) and you can see her contribution here.

It seems strange though that this bird, according to your notes, are "regarded as fairly common in Eastern Australia", yet we only have two photos of it on TN. Even surfing the web will provide you with a host of postage stamp sized photos, but very few large format shots and almost none of these are worth anything photographically. This is also the only photo I could find that clearly illustrates the "hammer-like feathers" on the heads of these birds. Therefore, this is a special contribution, not only to TN, but also to the entire World Wide Web (internet) and for that reason I've included it in my theme for "RARE & SIGNIFICANT contributions to TN".

IMHO the photo perhaps lacks a little composition and the white plumage shows a bit of OE, but the significance of the posting far outweighs any nits.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Ivan,
Very unique looking spoonbills. I have never observed these in person. I love the strong contrast between the pure white plumage and the black legs and bill. A very difficult exposure that you handled very well. That is one end of the tonal range to the other. They look great!

Hi Ivan,
For me this picture looks quite funny. These Royal Spoonbills have something in their attitude which makes me smile. Royal, yes. And the duck doesn't care.. Very interesting picture

They're very regal-looking, that's for sure! I love this grouping and the composition is grand.
Great sharpness for the distance and conditions too!

Hello Ivan,
What a strange spoonbills, I never susupect thewy existence. I´m marvelous for the odd feathers in its head. Looks very different from pink spoonbills we have in America.
Thanks for sharing

Lovely composition and interesting subject. It looks like the spoonbills are converging on the duck for the purpose of ???... I've not seen or heard of these birds before, being more familiar with the roseate spoonbills I use to see in Florida. That crest seems almost a counter-balance to the huge bill.

Beautiful colors and detail but a little over exposed on the white areas.

In all a very lovely picture of an interesting bird. TFS, Mish
