[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Christmas Island is located 2,600 Km north of Perth, but only 360 Km from Java. The island is the summit of a submarine mountain rising steeply to the central plateau. The island only covers 135 km2, but there are 100 million of this species of crab alone - there are 12 other species of land crab on the island. The natural vegetation is rainforest, which houses a unique ecossytem, dominated by crabs. Unusually the forest floor is very tidy as falling leaves are grabbed by the crabs.

63% of the island is now a national park. The island has, in the past, been extensively mined for phospates. This picture was taken on the plateau cirtcuit road which is made of phosphate waste.

The Island Tourist Board (www.christmas.net.au) are very helpful and have an excellent website. In fact everyone on the island is very helpful and readily help you locate the numerous endemic species, which make this the 'Galapagos of the Indian Ocean'.

Good details and colors but the overexposed ground is disturbing to the eye!
Try to shade the subject if the light is too bright. Try different angles!

nice colors. the shadow is very nice. a little sharpening might be nice

Hi James, if you saw a lobster this colour you'd know it was cooked. judging from the shadow it must have been pretty hot for him out there. I'm surprised they can take the heat. In any case you've got a great shot with excellent colour and the depth of field is just right, enough to accentuate the crab but not the background.
