Uluru is 346 metres high, more than 8 km (five miles) around, and has a harder exterior than many comparable rock formations. This has prevented the formation of scree slopes, resulting in the unusually steep faces near ground level.
Uluru is often referred to as a monolith, and for many years it was even listed in record books as the world’s largest monolith. That description is inaccurate, as it is part of a much larger underground rock formation. A common mistake is to include The Olgas as part of this formation but it is in fact made of a different material (conglomerate). [1]
Uluru is notable for appearing to change colour as the different light strikes it at different times of the day and year, with sunset a particularly remarkable sight. The rock is made of arkosic sandstone infused with minerals like feldspar that reflect the red light of sunrise and sunset, making it appear to glow. The rock gets its rust colour from oxidation.
Rainfall is uncommon in the area around Uluru, but during wet periods the rock acquires a silvery-grey colour, with streaks of black algae on the areas serving as channels for water flow. The rock itself is completely lacking in vegetation, but due to runoff the base is surrounded by water pools, fertile greenery, and wildlife. It has thus been an ideal meeting place for Aboriginal ceremonies throughout history.
Kata Tjuta, also called Mount Olga or The Olgas, literally meaning “many heads” owing to its peculiar formation, is another rock formation about 25 km from Uluru. Special viewing areas with road access and parking have been constructed to give tourists the best views of both sites at dawn and dusk.

This is very old photo, made with Konica Soap Box. It reminds me sometimes, that I have not learned anything during last 3 years. It is not a pretendent for high quality, because of it's scan.

Hello Aivar, nice spot of this beautifull place I remenber with love.

Aivar,
Interesting spot; good capture contentwise.
Good compo. It looks a bit grainy probably due to the 400 ISO film grain being scanned; probably my imagination:-).
Well done

Hi Aivar

This is truly amazing!
I've always been fascinated by this rock from Australia, but never really had the time to investigate the matter deeply, so i'm very happy to see this post and read it's interesting notes!
The picture itself is superb, with an amazing perspective, charming colors and a wonderful mood.

Hello Aivar,
It is great to see this rock up close. This is more beautiful than I thought. Great perspective picture. Sharpness, exposure, and color saturation are great. A splendid picture.
JC

Hi Aivar,

Your picture suffers a bit in quality as you noted but I like this picture of Ayers Rock because you have focused to a specific part of it. We usualy see pictures showing all of Ayers Rock but this POV is very nice. Like the colors and details.

PC :)

A mind-blowing image of a totally different aspect of this famous rock, Aivar. Views such as these must have struck fear in the hearts of our ancestors on the earth.
The trees in the forground provide perfect scale to gauge the mammoth size of this rock formation. The mist hovering over the top and the white water flowing through the red ravine make this picture a beauty to behold.
Thanks.
Ram

Hello Aivar,
The most strange of all rock formations I know of... here we can see an interesting detail depicted!
It is like a valley with a small stream...
Well framed subject, great colours are captured and the contrasting vegetation makes up a fine foreground interest!
Greetings,
Pablo -

hi aivar!
powerful and mighty photo with very
beautiful coulors and good composition!

Hi Aivar

This is an excellent shot. I like the composition showing the foregrong trees, but most of all the river of water cascading down the the valley. Lovely work. Great scan... well done!

Hello Aivar, nice composition and colours, it's good to see an alternative view of this famous rock. I like the mist creeping over the top - it's a shame it is a slightly overexposed but I read that it's an old film camera so of course some latitude must be given. I'm certain you have learned more than you think in 3 years.

Hello Aivar,
quite an interesting landscape, you captured it very well. POV, colors and scenery are incredible.

Hi Aivar,
What a awesome photo. The color and texture of the rock is very beautiful. The layers of foilage, rock and clouds are perfectly positioned. I love the way the water takes me up the rock toward the cloud cover.
TFS,
Niek

This is a really cool shot of Uluru even if it was made using a Konica Soap Box. :)

Hi Aivar,

Thanks for the kind critiques on my pictures. You are most gracious. I’m glad you liked it.

This is another one of your superb landscapes that I like so much. The composition is absolutely perfect. I wish that this was one of my pictures.

Well done and TFS.

Helo Aviar.
Wonderful shot of a rare sight. I was there in the wet of 2000 and I also have lots of nice shots of Uluru in the rain (I'll post them when I get a scanner!) This is from a great angle. I like the vertical showing the flow of water from the rock to the desert floor. Makes me homesick. Well done.
Regards, Steve.

I think this is the most interesting shot of Ayers Rock that I have seen. It is really different and I like it. The greens and the oranges are wonderful . I like the smooth texture of the wet rock next to the rougher foreground. The misty cloud and stream add so much.

Hello Aivar,

Excellent capture. It's really impressive scenery with that mighty rock and dense clouds.
Great colours too!
Best greetings,
Michal

Wonderful image with spectacular color on Uluru, even in the rain. I live near the largest granite monolith in the world, Stone Mountain, and have posted it on this site.

Very interesting photo, I've never been to that part of Australia.

Alli
