Dollar Birds, Eurystomus orientalis, is another spring visitor from the north. This stocky greenish bird has a wide red beak and large dark-brownish head. In flight a large white circle is visible on each wing. The call is loud and rasping. The Dollar Bird has a similar range to the Channel-bill but also extends into Victoria. We often see Dollar Birds performing aerial acrobatics as they catch insects. They head north between February and April and spend winter in New Guinea, Indonesia, Philippines, Japan and other parts of Southeast Asia. A truly cosmopolitan visitor.

What a colorful bird! I am not familiar at all with this one and I thank you for sharing. YOu have caught a great pose and have framed it well, though the bird is a bit soft on focus. It looks great with the bg too. Penny

G'day Jon,
Fine capture of a Dollarbird in a good pose and from a fine POV showing well against the OOF natural BG. I've seen these in NSW but couldn't get close enough to get a good shot.
Thanks for sharing this one,
Ivan

Hi Jon,
This is a superb specie that you captured in good pose and beautiful composition. Tones of colors are very agreeable with nice catch-light in its eye. I think that details are a little soft and I wonder were it comes from... Anyway this remains a very nice capture. Thanks,
Claudine

Hello Jon,
Very beautiful bird in great colours. Good sharpness and POV. The BG is a bit noisy. I made a WS. I hope you like it.
Very good composition.
Regards,
Peter

Hi Jon,

Very nice catch of 'Mr. Dollar' with green leafy background.
Yours having the black/grey beak, and mine was more of red /orange beak.
cheers,

Hi Jon, you have another camera I see, the Canon 40D - that's a great one. And so is the lens.
But the bird is quite unsharp. The only sharp thing on the bird is the catchlight in his eye. I think that with that camera and lens you would be more in focus.
Maybe more of the word on your intro page - "Persistance" - is needed. Keep practicing - you have a wonderful selection of birds on your gallery.

Hello Jon,
This is a lovely bird that you've captured here in a fine pose and lovely colours.
aybe you've cropped it a bit too heavily as it is not quite sharp and I remember it being hard to get close to these birds.
Many thanks, Ulla
