Double-barred Finch

Scientific name: Taeniopygia bichenovii
Family: Passeridae
Order: Passeriformes

The Double-barred Finch is one of the long-tailed grass-finches and is notable for its 'owl-faced' features, having a white face bordered black. It is grey-brown, with white underparts banded black above and below the chest, giving the species its name. The wings are black, spotted white, the tail is black and the bill and legs are blueish-grey. Juveniles are dulller, with indistinct chest bars. These grass-finches usually feed in flocks and have a bouncing, undulating flight pattern.

There are two subspecies of Double-barred Finch: the eastern race has a white rump and the western race has a black rump. Otherwise, distinguished form other finches by its 'owl-face'.

The Double-barred Finch is found in the Kimberley region through to west of the Gulf of Carpentaria (the western race annulosa), and then from Cape York down the east coast to south-eastern Victoria (the eastern race, bichenovii).

The Double-barred Finch prefers dry grassy woodlands and scrublands, open forests and farmlands. It is never far from water.

Hello Jon,
A great capture in the wild of this bird that is popular as a cage bird. This close portrait of a Doulble-barred Finch is taken from a fine POV with excellent sharpness against a pleasing BG.
I've seen them in Queensland but not as close as to get a shot like this!
TFS this beauty,
Cheers,
Ivan

All the best,

Hello Jon
What a delightful image to look at. This is such a pretty bird, the patterns and markings on the feathers are a great attraction. I just love the black lining alongside the white of the face and on the breast, as it makes the beauty of the bird stand out so much better and creates lovely effect. This is for sure a model bird and most pleasing to look at. Thanks for sharing.
Best regards
Anna

Hola Jon,
preciosa captura, pov y foco...
exquisito plumaje y composición.
saludos

Hi Jon

Perfection.

Everything is brilliant here, I can confidently say this is the best shot of a Double-bar I've seen. And the colours are also pefectly reproduced; many shot overexpose teh face so that the pale blue feathers appear white. You've really nailed this one.

Excellent work.

Chris

G'day Jon
I myself have been sitting out trying to capture our little finches of the same species here in Qld.
So far not as good as yours. Will keep trying though.
Great shot.

Witaj Jon,
naprawdę super zdjęcie!
Ostrość, DOF i barwy bardzo dobre. Kadr i POV też. Podoba mi się także jednolite tło będące dobrym kontrastem dla upierzenia ptaka.
Gratuluję i pozdrawiam

Hi Jon,
What an interesting specie that doesn't like any birds I know! You capture excellent details @ F5.6 with superb composition, exposure and colors. Australia is very exotic to me as you have species that we don't have here and who looks so different. Well seen and best regard,
Claudine
