I took this shot on the way to work, through my open car window.he was sitting on a wire fence next to a gravel road.

Name: Long-Tail (Shaft-tail or Heck's) Grassfinch (Poephila acuticauda)

Origin: Northwestern Australia.

Habitat: Grass and scrub lands but have also been seen in city parks and residential neighborhoods.

Sexing: Although the male and female are similar in appearance, there are some subtle differences. The male has a wider bib, the head of the female is slightly darker, and the beak of the male is slightly wider. Many say the mature female will have a slightly lighter colored bill. The male will puff out his chest feathers while singing.

bonjour Jon,
très belle image de ce petit oiseau, l'image est épurée de tout élement parasite, le BG est judicieusement harmonieux en couleur et flou, enfin, le support métallique donne un bon effet de perspective.

Good shot. Good sharpness and plumage details and he stands out really well against that lovely background. Well composed too.

Chris

Beautiful bird and a fine capture, Jon.
The shot is well composed and colourful.
I wonder what made the reddish-brown BG.
Thanks for your critique on my recent bird image and for sharing this lovely image.

Hello Jon,
Excellent capture of a Long-tail Grassfinch. This species must surely be a first on TN, in the wild anyway!
Even though the plain BG has a similar colour the finch shows well due to the sharpness and POV.
Nice one and thanks for sharing this,
Regards, Ivan

Hi Jon,

This looks nothing like any finch I have ever seen! The colors are just wonderful - and so many different colors. I love the orange beak and the red legs! Great shot from a car window. A marvelous composition on the diagonal rod.

Jon,
Cute little thing. Nicely capture, the blurred sofe focus background really bring out the bird. Good sharpness and clarity. Good placement of the bird in the image.
