[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Rainbow Pitta is normally a very shy bird. During the dry season they are almost invisible in the monsoon forest thickets of the Northern Territory's Top End.
With the first rise of humidity at the onset of the monsoon season they become very active.
The Rainbow Pitta, Pitta iris is a bird with velvet black head and below, green upperparts, pale blue shoulder and olive green tail. It has black bill, pink legs, brown eye and reddish brown streak along each side of crown. Both sexes are similar, with female slightly smaller and duller than male.
An Australian endemic, the Rainbow Pitta is distributed to the forests of northern Australia. As with other pittas, it is a secretive and shy bird. The diet consists mainly of insects, arthropods and small animals. The female lays three to four glossy cream eggs with blotches inside its large domed nest.

Hallo Jon
Before I even read your note I sensed that this bird could be shy. But truly beautiful with an assortment of bright and beautiful colours. I just love the big black eye, the patch of feathers on the head that looks like a cap, the patch of blue feathers just under the neck line and the tiny piece of green right down on the tail piece. Thank you for sharing this bird that is unknown to me with us. A pleasant image to look at, and I enjoyed your notes.
Kind regards
Anna

Hello Jon,
A Rainbow Pitta! Wow!
A fine capture aided by the use of flash with great sharpness and taken from an excellent POV. The composition in its natural habitat is pleasing too.
Must be marvellous to see this guy and TFS!

Hi Jon,
Even with bad light conditions, it is amazing to see a Rainbow Pitta here, on TN pages.

Hi Jon, very nice shot of this rare bird. I haven't seen one of these, and looking at their distribution I guess it's no wonder, so thanks for the introduction here. By all accounts this is a great capture of this one in it's natural environment. You got very good close detail on this bird with excellent colour. The lighting in these conditions is excellent. Very good use of your flash.

Thanks, John

Hi Jon,

Another beauty that could only be from Australia. Of course this is an entirely new bird for me. The shot is wonderful - the details of the face and plummage are perfect. So many beautiful colored feathers make him outstanding. Love the pose and the sparkle in his eye.

Hello Jon,
Lovely capture of a Rainbow Pitta hiding among the undergrowth. You caught it in a fine pose and show its beautiful colours very well. We saw the Noisy Pitta in Queensland but only very early in the morning in poor light! It was hard to get near too as it was so shy! You did very well here!
Many thanks and regards, Ulla
