[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Red-rumped Parrots are medium sized birds (up to 27 cm). The males are colourful with bright green, a blue green head, red rump, yellow shoulders and belly. The female blends in better with a duller olive green colour, with a green rump and faint yellow or light green on the belly.

The two birds seen here are a male and female. The female in this shot (in the lower right) was a little camera shy; she turned her back to me in the shot. A better shot of the female can be seen here. In the workshop I have included a back shot of the male giving a better indication as to where the name comes from.

They are said to be found in south-eastern Australia, throughout most of New South Wales and Victoria. They are found typically in open grasslands or lightly timbered plains. I saw these guys in a park in Adelaide (which is probably on the western limit of their distribution). I haven’t seen them yet anywhere else.

They feed in pairs or small flocks, preferring seeds and leaves of grasses. They prefer feeding on the ground. They are often seen feeding in suburban parks.

These birds mate for life. The female chooses and prepares the nesting site. Eggs are laid on a decayed wood bed and the female incubates the eggs (for up to 21 days) while the male forages for food for her. The young remain in the nest for 30 days.

Workflow was as follow:
Shot in Raw - NEF files adjusted for highlights and shadow
Adjusted levels
Adjusted curves (mainly for contrast)
Dodged and burned with overlay layer (5% opacity brush)
Added Saturation layer (and reduced saturation on grass area – yellow -15)
Added a layer for sharpening and “over-sharpened” with Smart Sharpen
Modified sharpening with a layer mask (15% opacity black brush)
Saved as a tiff
For this post, cropped, disabled sharpen layer and added another with similar technique to the original for the reduced size, framed, and saved as a jpeg

Great image of these two birds! I'm going to have to investigate the parks in Adelaide a bit closer I think!! Good sharpness and details on the male and wonderful colours. The red certainly does show up in the workshop! Well done and TFS

I don't know why, maybe they don't spend much time there maybe they are preferably photographed in other locations...

Hello James, An interesting shot, i know they 'ren't easy to get....rather keep flitting away,.never-the-less a nice cpature, the Mrs has apprently showing he back to us, but the Mister definitely looks handsome.Wonder why are they called the Red rumped, most of it seem to be green.

What interesting and colourful birds live there.The colours are excellent.The one bird demonstrates very well the lovely plumage colours and the other shows us a good look at tailfeathers.lol.Nicely done.
