This image was taken at Birdwood Primary Schools annual Farm Day which is run to raise money for the school. It a great day and on this occassion it was very cold but pleasant. People light their little camp fires and enjoy, hence the smoke in the background.

This bird is an endangered species. This one would have no doubt been injured, rescued and hand reared. As it is highly unlikely that I would ever see one in the wild I thought you may like to see this image.

Cockatoos: Family Cacatuidae
Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo (south-eastern)
Calyptorhynchus banksii graptogyne

The nationally endangered south-eastern subspecies of the Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo is distinguished from rest of the species by its small size, brightly coloured female birds and specialised feeding and breeding requirements.

In Victoria, Australia, the South-eastern Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo occurs from Portland in south-east to just north of the Little Desert, while in South Australia it is found from Bangham-Frances to Mt Gambier. Its former distribution may never have been much greater than this, but the extent of occurrence within this range has declined significantly due to habitat loss (c. 60% of habitat in Vic and 80% in SA has been destroyed). The current population is around 700 to 1,000 birds.

These Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo's feed on the seeds of Brown Stringybarks Eucalyptus baxteri / E. arenacea and Bulokes Allocasuarina leuhmannii. For nesting, the Cockatoo's require old River Red Gums E. camaldulensis or Yellow Gums E. leucoxylon with large hollows. Most nest trees are within 2km of suitable feeding habitat.

Much of the feeding habitat used by these birds is protected in State Forests. However, nesting habitat on private land is disappearing rapidly as a consequence of tree dieback, felling of potential nest trees for firewood, and the general intensification of farming (i.e change from grazing to farm forestry, cropping etc).

According to the Action Plan for Australian Birds 2000, the south-eastern subspecies of the Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo is endangered.

Hi Deb,
Excellent close-up of this Black Cockatoo! Good sharpness and details and I like the splash of red in the tail feathers. Such a pity we don't see them that often in the wild anymore and that it is endangered! Well done and TFS
Cheers Tina :-)

Hi Debbie,

Wonderful close-up of this cockatoo. Colors are fantastic - good blacks and the red is striking. Excellent details showing his black beak, eye and plummage. You caught him in a great pose.

Jane

Hi Debbie.
Good detail and exposure for the black, sharp, DOF, all spot on. Notes are informative about it not being seen much in the wild now. Wonderful day out with the children and being able to photograph some nature.

Hello Debbie,
Fine, frame-filling shot of the cockatoo. The feather detail is rendered with good detail. You can improve on that by saving closer to the 200 KB limit. I like the misty background, too. Regards,
Hakan

Hi Deb,
What a magnificent shot of this wonderful bird. The smoke in the background has the effect of drawing all of the attention to the bird. It would have been great to see the bird life-size ...all cockatoos seem to have a great deal of character about them. Thanks so much for sharing this image.
Regards,
Kerry

Hello Debbie,
Fantastic photo of this Cockatoo. Good sharpness, colours and DOF. I don't know if you have see him flying, but then the tail demonstrates red and yellow colours like a fire. I've seen this once on a photo. Amazing.

Peter
