I visited Wittunga Gardens with a friend on a nice Autumn day. I know duck images are common but I liked this one. I thought the duck posed nicely for me. I had trouble identifying it but perhaps someone out there knows which one it is.

UPDATE:
With John's help we have managed to identify the duck as an Australian Wood Duck.

Australian Wood Duck
Scientific name: Chenonetta jubata
Family: Anatidae
Order: Anseriformes
What does it look like?
Description
The Australian Wood Duck is a medium-sized 'goose-like' duck with a dark brown head and a pale grey body with two black stripes along the back. Males have the darker head and a small dark mane, with a speckled brown-grey breast and a black lower belly and undertail. The females have a paler head with two white stripes, above and below the eye, a speckled breast and flanks, with a white lower belly and undertail. In flight, the wings are pale grey above, contrasting with black wingtips, and have a noticeable white bar on the underside (the secondaries). They walk easily on land and may be seen perching on logs and in trees. They will only take to open water when disturbed. This species is also known as the Maned Duck or the Maned Goose.

Wittunga Botanic Garden:

In 1902, Edwin Ashby established Wittungas’s gardens based on a formal English design. The garden’s continual development reflected Edwin’s passion for Australian flora and included a collection of South African species.

When Edwin died in 1941 Wittunga was passed to his son, Keith Ashby. In 1965, Keith Ashby, with his family’s encouragement, donated Wittunga to the State, under the care of the Board of the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium. After Keith Ashby’s death in 1971, the Board assumed full responsibility for Wittunga.

The Garden was officially opened to the public in September 1975.

Hi Debbie,
Yes. well exposed, sharply focused shots of swimming ducks are a dime a dozen (does that mean anything outside of the U.S>?). You did a very nice job of avoiding the cliche. Not only is the duck exhibiting an interesting behavier, but you did a nice job of cropping. The negative space at the left and top makce a very effective composition.
TFS, Joel

The duck DID pose nicely for you. Simple, sharp composition. Nice eye-level composition. Interesting note on the gardens. I'd have cropped perhaps a bit more at the top, but that's taste. I think it works well as is, too.

Hi Debbie, great pose by the Duck. I'm not entirely sure but based on what we can see here it looks like a female Australian Wood Duck. You've got a great shot of her preening with excellent detail on the eye and feathers.

Thanks, John

Fantastic view of a preening session in progress. The variety of shapes and textures of the duck's feathers is wonderful and adds depth to the composition. Well done.

Hi Debbie,
Super picture of this Woodduck duck preening her plumage. Excellent composition and colours. Good definition for what I am presuming was a hand held photo.
