Last weekend I stayed with my sister. Each morning I go for a walk to the Breakwater Wetland which is not far from her house in Lockleys a suburb of Adelaide. It is such a beautiful spot along the Torrens River I love visiting. I captured this image of a Purple Swamphen.

Purple Swamphen
Scientific name: Porphyrio porphyrio
Family: Rallidae
Order: Gruiformes
Description
The Purple Swamphen is a large rail. It is mainly dusky black above, with a broad dark blue collar, and dark blue to purple below. As the Purple Swamphen walks, it flicks its tail up and down, revealing its white undertail. The bill is red and robust, and the legs and feet orange-red. For such a bulky bird, the Swamphen is an accomplished flier and will readily take to the air to escape danger. In flight, the long legs and elongated toes trail behind or hang underneath the body. Purple Swamphens are proficient swimmers, but prefer to wander on the edges of the water, among reeds and on floating vegetation.

Habitat
The Purple Swamphen is found around freshwater swamps, streams and marshes.

Feeding
The diet of the Purple Swamphen includes the soft shoots of reeds and rushes and small animals, such as frogs and snails. However, it is a reputed egg stealer and will also eat ducklings when it can catch them. The Purple Swamphen uses its long toes to grasp food while eating.

Hi Debbie,
Nicely capturing this swamp hen at its natural surrounding. May need to make colors adjustment.

Debbie, very nice creature. A colorful and lively one.

I like the moment you caught, and considering you used 1/25, sharpness is really good.

H Debbie,
Very good shot of this interesting bird. Good details colors and sharpness. I like also the dynamic of this picture.
TFS, Mario.

Hi Debbie, this is one I haven't seen yet. So ugly it's cute eh? I think your capture of the colour is good, and great detail. It's not easy pulling in those dark red eyes on that dark head, and there is good differentiation between the feather layers. The backdrop is an interesting one. This greenery makes for a very nice background.

Thanks, John

Hi Debbie,

Great shot of the Purple Swamphen, its a bit like our Moorhens and it took me ages to get a shot of one of them, so well captured, I like the movement you have captured in the pose and its a nice low POV, good detail and great colours too.

TFS Hilary :o)

Hi Debbie,
Great color and interesting light. Good POV and composition as well. Perhaps a slightly faster shutter/ISO would be better for this one?
Howard

Hi Debbie, a lovely shot of the Swamphen. This looks a lot like our Moorhen, with the red cap and feather colouring. Nice capture showing the legs stepping out. You caught good light bringing out highlights and good colour, the feathers have a nice sheen. All is clear and sharp. Great shot.

Hi Debbie.
I like your wonderful colourful picture. I am amazed with exposure parameters. Great DOF and terrific sharpness of the moving bird despite the exposure time 1/25 s. Bravo. Skillfully done amazing shot.

Hi Debbie,
this is an interesting bird and looks to be a relative of the American coot as it is similar in body shape.Your capture suffers a little because your exposure time was too long for hand held or tripod shooting on a moving subject but apart from that you have good colour and detail making this a good shot of a bird I have never seen before.Tfs. Dear Debbie,
I never visited your site before, sorry! I sheepishly make the time shift responsible for that.
This Purple swamphen is a great shot despite the slight double image (due to precipitation and exitement, I suppose). The animal is difficult to ever encounter because it stays hidden for much of the time and is shy. I tried for a whole day to spot one in Iran at the Caspi sea near Ramsar and all I saw was a disappearing act. My heartfelt congratulation to your quick reaction and beautiful shot!
Best regards to you,
Dietrich

Hi Deb

One of my favourite Australian birds - the POV is really good and the colours also and strong Australian light also.
