[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
These Firetails move so fast. This image was taken a Warrawong Sanctuary in the Adelaide Hills near Mylor. It is a delightful place to visit with lovely walks where you can see Wallaby's, Kangaroos, Koala's, Bilby's and much more. My friend an I sat in the Bilby Cafe which has a delightful open fire which is much appreciated and had some lunch and a coffee. The birds can be viewed easily through a large window. This image was taken through the window. It would be near on impossible to capture an image of this tiny, tiny bird otherwise. The area is fairly dark. This is a great place for people to visit, especially those from overseas. Entry is free.

Red-Browed Firetail
Aegintha temporalis
Also known as: Red-Headed Finch, Sydney Waxbill, Red Tip, Temporal Finch

The main sub-species is the Lesser Red Brow (Aegintha temporalis minor) and originates in Queensland. It is about 3/4 the size of the normal Red Brow and its colouring is a bit brighter.

Size
110 - 120 mm.

SEXING
There are subtle differences between the sexes. Hens tend to carry less yellow on the mantle and the red eye stripe is not as long. The main difference is in the body colour. The cocks are a steel blue-grey whereas the hens are brown blue-grey.

BREEDING
Red-browed Firetail Finches form permanent pair bonds and stay together throughout the year. Both male and female share incubation and brooding by day and roost together in the nest at night.

Nest
Dome of dry grass with tunnel side entrance.

Eggs
Four to six, pure white, oval, about 16x12 mm.

Hi Deb,
Great capture of this Fire-tail! Good sharpness and details in the plumage especially since it was taken through a glass window. Lovely colours, the red really shows up well! Great notes too! Well done and TFS
Cheers Tina :-)

This is not a bad capture for having been taken through glass. It is a tad soft but the pose, exposure and colors are nice.

Hi Deb

Considering this shot was taken through glass it is very good. I was wondering how you got so close. Excellent clours.

James

Hi Debbie, this is a great tight sharp shot of this Finch. These guys aren't easy and you've caught him looking great in his natural element. Excellent colour and detail (even if you did have to shoot through the window). Very nice!

Thanks, John

Very superb shot. Finches are some of the most colorful and beautiful small birds. You captured this one with great sharpness and details. Colors are very bright and vivid woutout going overboard. Exposure is spot on as well. Great job.

It is a beautiful, tiny bird. The focus is a bit soft but excellent for the circumstances of being shot through a glass. The colors are very nicely saturated. You caught the bird in a nice pose. TFS.

Hi Debbie.
You managed to create a very nice shot despite the bad light conditions. I like your exposure parameters and great DOF. Image of the bird is excellent: sharp, detailed and coloured nicely. Pose of the bird and pictured moment are so attractive as well as the composition at whole. My compliments and TFS.
Alexei.
