[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This image was captured at Breakout Wetlands in a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. The seagull I know is very common but I like the way this one was on the post and preening itself. I don't know about the rest of you but I can only see one foot.

Gulls are birds in the family Laridae. They are most closely related to the terns (family Sternidae) and only distantly related to auks, and skimmers, and more distantly to the waders. Most gulls belong to the large genus Larus.

They are typically medium to large birds, usually grey or white, often with black markings on the head or wings. They have stout, longish bills, and webbed feet. Gull species range in size from the Little Gull, at 120 g (4.2 oz) and 29 cm (11.5 inches), to the Great Black-backed Gull, at 1.75 kg (3.8 lbs) and 76 cm (30 inches).

Most gulls, particularly Larus species, are ground nesting carnivores, which will take live food or scavenge opportunistically. The live food often includes crabs and small fish. Apart from the kittiwakes, gulls are typically coastal or inland species, rarely venturing far out to sea. The large species take up to four years to attain full adult plumage, but two years is typical for small gulls.
Gulls — the larger species in particular — are resourceful and highly-intelligent birds, demonstrating complex methods of communication and a highly-developed social structure - for example many gull colonies display mobbing behaviour, attacking and harassing would-be predators and other intruders.

Great pose and expert exposure handling - it is difficult to retain details whilst photographing gulls.

Great timing to get this preening pose. The image is crisp clear and well exposed. Quite a shock to see this gull with only one foot. But also relieve that it seem to be in good health and adjust to the handicap well.

Nice pose for this seagull. There are alot of gulls in SA, Im from Adelaide originally and you do see far to many there sometimes. However you have captured this one well. The dark background brings out the white plumage very nicely. Good colours and depth, a good photo,

A lovely relaxed pose ,with wonderful clarity and rich ,deep colour saturation.I only see one foot too,he must have lost his foot in a misadventure,but seems to appear healthy and well adapted to standing on tuther.Nicely composed.Very good POV and DOF.TFS

Great capture. I like the simplicity. And his pose. And yes, it seems he does only have one foot. I remember often seeing gulls with legs and feet missing. Maybe big seagoing creatures take a nibble now and then! And I didn't know this was called 'preening'. Thanks for that. Well done.
