[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
In some parts of the eastern Australian deserts there is little or no soil left, it being blown away by millennia of winds. The resulting flat landscape consists of wind-polished stones that are known as gibber-plains. There is very little vegetation growing on these plains, even after good rain, yet some animals still manage to live here.
This is a Banded Lapwing, an uncommon nomadic bird that is distributed over much of the Australian continent south of the Tropic of Capricorn. It prefers open areas, especially stony plains and short grassy plains. They are usually found in pairs or small groups, with only the occasional gatherings of flocks.
I hadn’t seen this species for years, so I was happy to have several observations of pairs along this trip, including this guy who happily posed for me.
It was around midday when I took this shot and around 40 deg C, so the conditions for photography were far from ideal. In addition to that, I'd only had my new camera for a couple of weeks and was still trying to learn how to use it (so many buttons and options). Nevertheless, I was happy with the result as it illustrates the habitat we found this and other animals in.
Thanks for looking and thanks for all the critiques you’ve provided on the shots I’ve posted so far from my desert adventure.

Chris, in my opinion, a rather funny bird - and that's nice.

Great composition and pov.

The eyes are really very nice. Besides, beautiful feathers.

The colors that make up the ground are interesting against the Banded Lapwing. He did poise for you! Excellent DOF and composition.

Nice capture Chris but for me the bird becomes lost in the fussy BG. Maybe darkening the BG would be an option. Details and composition are very good. Well done.

What a beautiful bird, Chris. Can't say that I have ever seen one of those. The colors and markings are gorgeous. Though the BG is kind of noisy (not that there is anything you can do about it), the details are very sharp and well-exposed. Great job and TFS. : )

Un bel oiseau,l'exposition et les couleurs sont très bien.

Félicitations et merci poour l'envoie!

Hi Chris,
Under the conditions, I would say you did an excellent job getting such good exposure, colors, and detail. It looks very hot there in this scene. An interesting looking bird that you have captured well. Just laughing because around here people would pay about $40.00 a ton for that decorative colored rock for their landscaping. Around there everyone would like the dirt back.
Scott
