[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Rayed Blue (Candalides heathi) has a widespread, though patchy distribution through most of Australia south of the Tropic of Capricorn. It inhabits open woodland and heathlands and can be found flying from August to June with adult emergence apparently coinciding with rainfall events.

They have a wingspan of 29mm and generally fly close to the ground, stopping regularly to bask in the sun. This one was found patrolling a sandstone track through an upland heath at about 800m. Night time temperatures were down to 0 deg C, and it was only 9 deg C when we found this one soaking up the morning sun on a north-facing slope.

This was the last butterfly I saw before winter really kicked in during the second week of June.

Nice contrast of light and dark. Great focus and detail. We can see the fringe around its wings. Thanks! Reid

Hello Chris,
How sad that this should be the last one! And the rainstorms you had recently sounded pretty awful. Anyway, you managed to get a very sharp shot in the last minute of this very fine dark blue butterfly. It looks in very good shape and the colours are beautiful.
I like its pose and the composition very much.
Many thanks and regards, Ulla

Hello Chris,
This shot of the Rayed Blueis a very nice farewell to your autumn, the butterfly itself looking pretty fresh before his wintery end.
Fine sharpness and composition.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hi Chris,
This is a very dark looking blue.
Is that the usual colour?
I had no idea the temperature over there got so low at this time of year.
I guess I know more people on Queensland than anywhere, so I'm always hearing about the heat.
Nice shot of this little one.
Cheers, Steve

WOW. You certainly brought out the best in this butterfly. I see nice detail, great edges, perfect antennas, and the subtle color differences. For a butterfly on the ground, you certainly achieved good DOF.

Hola Chris,
Bonita imagen con gran nitidez y detalle, buen contraste con el fondo, Saludos

Hi, Chris!
Maybe the last but very, very nice butterfly, particularly it's dark brown, almost black, satin wings. Excellent shot!
