This is a photo from early 2006 of a water Dragon in one of Brisbane botanical gardens, this is the one near Mt.Cootha. Im posting an old photo as I have just returned from a holiday and so I haven't posted anything recently.

This water dragon was a very good model, it did not flinch or move while taking photos and while setting up the tripod. This dragon was about 55cm long with a very solid body. I did minor touch up in PS, such as curves, levels, hue/saturation and unsharpen mask. However the dragon did have a bit of a leaf on its nose so I PS clone tooled it out.

Brisbane has a large population of water dragons in and around the creeks and rivers that flow into Moreton Bay. Size of the dragons do vary but it seems the larger dragons like this one are in protected gardens or untouched water ways. Although many smaller ones can be seen frequently while walking near water coarse through out Brisbane if you are looking close enough. I would estimate the average size would be about 20cm to 35cm. Many will run or swim away but the larger ones are not all that afraid of people and will hold their ground. They are not dangerous, if they feel threatened they will just turn and run.

Hi Matthew,
A fine portrait of this water dragon!
I like your POV and all the details caught on the reptil.
The tight crop works pretty well to focus the attention on the textured skin of the animal.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Hi Matthew.
Wow, great close-up. You can see every wrinkle and crinkle. Great DOF for what needs to be pin sharp for impact and great exposure and detail.

Beautiful presentation Matt. Almost looks like he posed for this one, either that or he wanted to climb into that camera of yours. Your detail of the portrait is incredible, with good fall off into the background through effective use of your depth of field. Colours are very good. I'd love to see one of these guys for real now.

Thanks, John

Hi Matt

An excellent portrait of this impressive dragon. I like the POV and the tight crop here giving it a vivid in-your-face outcome. You have captured some great details and striking textures on this reptile's skin.

The BG is well removed and OOF thus isolating the subject very well. The exposure was well managed thus providing amazing light on the lizard. I don't know how large these guys can grow, but at 55cm it sounds like a pretty sizeable animal. I must say, I cannot see where you removed the leave so even the PP work was very well done.

Good work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Matthew
great portrait with good compo and great BG, clours lovely. Sharpness extrem (maybe even a bit too much USM, some skinfolds above the eye look a bit pixelated)
Great Capture

Everton.

What a fabulous face!!! So full of character...you captured it well with wonderful contrasts and a great pov. :)

Hi Matt,
I love the detail in the face of the 'Dragon'. A tight crop but I would have cropped it harder and taken out the left side more, just my opinion of course.
Well done,
Regards,
Peter

Excellent portrait of a Water Dragon, Matt.
I like the immaculate details and colours on its body.
You have brought out a wonderful picture from your archives.
Thanks for sharing and regards.

Hi Matt,
An excellent frame filling portrait. A spot on exposure has the colors and detail looking great. Really grat texture in the skin. The macro lens really gave some sharp detail.
Scott

How did I miss this elegant picture of such a noble creature! You pass along more than notice and words, but feelings as fingers down a chalk board..or otherwise a soothing beat of life, slowly......through a small ones life...

Hello Matt!
Really I am an entomologist but I like a lot to watch reptiles on the pictures. And this close-up is very impressive. I like especially the eye-contact and sharpness.
Best greetings,
Radomir
