Hello friends, today I have a Jewel Beetle from the Family Buprestidae. I’m pretty sure it’s a Stigmodera macularia.
These beetles are nectar feeders as adults and are usually found between November and February in the Sydney region. There have been over 200 species recorded in the Sydney area and some years are very good for finding different species and most years you might only see a few species. The larvae are wood borers.
This species grows to 65mm in length and here its feeding on flowers of a lemon-scented tea tree (Leptospermum polygalifolium).

Ciao Chris,
un Buprestidae veramente bello e particolare quello che hai fotografato.
I grossi punti sulle elitre sono veramente impressionanti e nitidi.
Grazie,
Marcello

Nice one Chris!
What a cool capture of this attractive beetle.
I wonder why it has evolved with all these textured dots?
It looks good on the Tea Tree flowers.
Great stuff.
Cheers
Steve

Hello Chris,
you posted 2 jewels - the beetle and your picture. You managed the light here very well: there are no disturbing reflections and also the dark parts of the head show structural details in spite of the fact that light comes from the right. Perfect sharpness!
Best wishes, Peter

Hey Chris, this is a very beatiful beetle. You've captured it well with great colour and excellent detail. Very nice macro work. Catching it on the flowers provides an excellent composition as well.

Thanks, John

bonjour chris

Hi,
This is a very good picture. Indently even I had seen and shot this in a similar setting.
have a look at :- http://www.treknature.com/viewphotos.php?l=3&p=94266.

I like the way you have streched the aperture value to get a decent DOF.
