Cyathea australis - Rough Tree Fern

This was captured in the Blue Mountains about 50 km west of Sydney. It shows the remarkable Australian Tree Fern in the foreground and beyond are tall Eucalyptus trees. The Blue Mountains have their name from the bluish haze that constantly lingers over the area. This is said to be caused by millions of Eucalyptus trees emitting a mist of Eucalyptus oil.

“Cyathea australis is a species of tree fern native to southeastern Queensland, New South Wales and southern Victoria in Australia, as well as Tasmania and Norfolk Island. It grows in moist shady forest, both coastal and montane, at an altitude of up to 1280 m. The erect trunk is usually up to 12 m tall, although specimens reaching 20 m have been reported from Queensland, Australia. Fronds are bi- or tripinnate and may reach 4 m in length, occasionally even 6 m. These form a distinctive crown that is dark green above and lighter green below. C. australis was described by Robert Brown in 1810 from a specimen collected on King Island in Bass Strait, off the coast of Tasmania. It is the type for the genus Alsophila, which has now been reduced to a section. The specific epithet australis means "southern" and refers to this southerly location.” (Extract from Wikipedia)

I’ve also posted a capture of this fern from above in the WORKSHOP.

Is it just me or are you getting "better"....hmmmm...not sure there is such a thing as better but for the life of me I could swear that you are doing something different and appearing as much more special...not sure how or why but I'll figure it out....as with your super eye for details, this is lovely...and thanks for your kind words as well.

Beautiful landscape.
Thanks, you make me open my dictionary and find what is 'fern' in English. So now I know one word more than a minute ago.

Hi Uleko,
Nice introduction to those Tree Ferns, the ferns I know up to now were all bottom dwellers. And that "starburst" from your WS is a real beauty. Of course, the Eucalyptus trees in the BG are not "foreign" to me! Thanks for the landscape friend.

Hi Ulla,

A beautiful scene with the trees, mountains, and clouds. The lighting is wonderful even on a cloudy day.

Hi Ulla

My favourite plants - I have a grove of about 30 in my garden - D. Antartica, D Fibrosa and C Australis. These are captured beautifully as the croziers are unfurling. They are well plced in the shot nd the colours are good too.

James
