Dusky Moorhen - Gallinula tenebrosa

Another bird captured at Lane Cove National Park in Sydney.

“This is a bird in the rail family which occurs in Australia, New Guinea and Indonesia. The New Guinea birds are smaller, at 25-32cm in length, than the Australian race (35-40 cm, 55-65 cm wingspan). In Indonesia, this species is declining due to competition from the closely related Common Moorhen on the islands where both birds occur.

The adult Dusky Moorhen is mainly dark grey-black, with a browner tinge to the upper parts. It has a red frontal shield and yellow-tipped red bill like its Eurasian relative, but lacks the white flank line shown by Common Moorhen, and has orange-yellow rather than yellow legs.

Sexes are similar, but young birds have mid-brown plumage. This is a noisy species with a loud kruk call.
Dusky Moorhen is found in wetland habitats, with a preference for freshwater marshes. It will forage on rubbish tips, and is generally omnivorous, taking a wide variety of plant and animal food.

This species builds a bulky nest at the water's edge, and lays 5-18 whitish eggs. It is territorial when breeding, but otherwise gregarious.” From Wikipedia

This was taken from a distance of 5 metres with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened.

Hello Ulla,
it looks very much alike a black pukeko (the new zealand purple moorhen). These legs arfe fantastic and it looks like the legs are made for walking despite being a marshland bird.
Fine picture!
All the best,
Jacob

Hej Ulla

Hi Ulla,
This is quite a good tele-close up, the movements of the bird adequately frozen and the shallow DOF was enough to capture it sharply in focus from 5 meters and the exposure was spot on, giving perfect detail of the dark plumage. And well, I can't keep from asking this, are those the natural colors of the legs or did you paint them somehow?
Joking aside, this really is a pleasant composition Ulla, TFS and regards,
Mehmet

Hi Ulla,
Very nice and interesting bird. Similar to Fulica atra (Coot) that present also in Turkey. But the color of legs, bil and frontal region different. Regards,
Mustafa

Hi Ulla,
Outstanding shot of this Dusky Moorhen with awesome colours and sharp details on its plumage. The 'walk' is perfectly freezed and I like the intensity on its eyes searching for food. Good light and exposure management and the composition is superb. Kudos.

Interesting colors - love the colors on the face particularly...and the color of the bird's feet - how they are almost mirrored by the colors of the leaves on the ground.
