I couldn’t resist this one, having backed the car out of the garage for my wife this morning (steep driveway) say no more, I could hear a bit of a din in the back garden.

I have a pair of Kookaburras which come in usually every morning for a bite to eat, but this morning I was introduced to the offspring who made it very clear he/she was a little hungry!

The Kookaburra is instantly recognisable in both plumage and voice. It is generally off-white below, faintly barred with dark brown, and brown on the back and wings. The tail is more rufous, broadly barred with black. There is a conspicuous dark brown eye-stripe through the face. It is one of the larger members of the kingfisher family.

Identification may only be confused where the Laughing Kookaburra's range overlaps that of the Blue-winged Kookaburra, Dacelo leachii, in eastern Queensland. The call of the Blue-winged Kookaburra is coarser than that of the Laughing Kookaburra, and ends somewhat abruptly. The Blue-winged Kookaburra lacks the brown eye-stripe, has a blue tail and a large amount of blue in the wing, and has a pale eye.

Laughing Kookaburras are found throughout eastern Australia. They have been introduced to Tasmania, the extreme south-west of Western Australia, and New Zealand. Replaced by the Blue-winged Kookaburra in central northern and north-western Australia, with some overlap in Queensland, although this species is more coastal.

They feed mostly on insects, worms and crustaceans, although small snakes, mammals, frogs and birds may also be eaten. Prey is seized by pouncing from a suitable perch. Small prey is eaten whole, but larger prey is killed by bashing it against the ground or tree branch.

Hello Richard,
Great timing, nice moment capture,
lovely bird, nice details and composition,
best regards, Dejan

Hi Richard,
What a strange specie :)! This little one looks very funny to me. This is a nice capture, very dynamic and expressive. You caught nice details in good exposure. IMHO, I think that composition is a little too centered. If you could have cropped it a little to the right side, eye would have been more attired to the subject. This still is a very nice shot :)!

Marie

An Australian icon. Nice sharp image with good exposure. The slope of the perch hints that he was in your driveway, probably chuckling at you as you were reversing.

wonderful composition.....
and very good photo...

Very nice shot of this cute baby bird from Australia, Richard.
The wide open mouth says it all; it is hungry alright. Did you feed the poor thing?
Sharp focus on the eye is the best feature of this portrait image.
TFS and regards.
Ram

Hi Rick, very nice "in your face" shot. I love how you can almost see down his gullet, and that eye is awesome. Not bad for a "rush job". Yup the composition can be improved but that is only a little PP. You've got the shot, and it's great.

Thanks, John

Wowww Rick, perheaps your best shot !!!
All is perfect, subject, attitude, focus, colours and composition
very well done my friend ... and direct in my favourites,
cheer and many thanks
Pat

Hi Richard

Great capture - wonderful POV and eye contact, plus great detail.

I think the amazing thing about Kookaburras - to a visitor is their size - they are such big birds (especially compared to the European Kingfisher).

James

Hello Richard,

Nice one Rick. I bet he can make some noise. I think I would have been tempted to include the other bird to show the interaction between the two. Great job!

Excellent, a bit different from the usual kookaburra photo. The sharpness is great, guess that is the difference between a 5D and a 400D?
