Little Friarbird – Philemon citreogularis

This bird is the smallest of a group of Australian Honeyeaters called Friarbirds. It is fairly common in Eucalyptus forests and woodlands near water in the eastern and northern parts of Australia. It is a noisy bird and mostly seen high up in the trees, but it also visits gardens and orchards. It feeds on nectar, fruit, seeds and insects.

I found this one in the grounds of a school on a tree that I think is a Grevillea robusta. Typical for this species is the blue-grey skin below the eye. It lacks the bill-knob seen on other Friarbirds. The yellow wash on its throat indicates that it is a young specimen.

This was taken from a distance of about 10 metres with the camera handheld. It has been reduced in size, cropped and sharpened.

Hi Ulla.
Amazing in every aspect picture with great DOF and sharpness of the entire image. The unknown for me bird is fine and funny. Blossoming twig is great too. Sunlight and vibrant colours decorate the image perfectly. Composition is also spot on. Bravo. Superb job.

Hi Ulla. This looks like one of jaycee Jane pictures with blue sky. Once again a very clear and well detaied close of the bird. natural looking colours and good use of the light. well done TFS.
Nick..

Ulla;
you and your husband are both very good and very different int he way you see or PP things...One is female and one male but it is not any quality based on that...just different..although there is that dainty quality in the sharpening process which makes it fine as sleek but still not overs harpened..

wonderfull capture, this bird is splendid and very well photographied with splendid and vivid colours, excellent focus and great lighting
very nice composition, well done,
friendly,
Pat

Well Ulla, you've given us an interesting species on an interesting species this time. Not an easy achievement, I think. Both the bird and the tree are unknown to me, which shows the degree of my kowledge (or ignorance) in biology!
Cordially yours,
Mehmet

Hi Ulla,
this is the first ever Little Friarbird on TN!!! :)
So congratulations for sharing his new bird with us!
And what a fine shot it is!
The clarity is incredible!
Very sharp with great detail.
Beautiful lighting and colours.
Well done,
Joe

Hello Ulla,
Excellent photo in amazing clear colours and perfect sharpness. Outstanding POV, DOF and composition. The blue sky is very beautiful.
Regards,
Peter

Hello Ulla
I don't think I have ever seen a bird with such a thin neck and face. This is a very pretty "summer feeling" posting. Clear and bright blue sky, green leaves on the tree and colourful pollen filled flowers. Some of the pollen is still stuck to this Little Friarbird's beak. I also like the patch of yellow feathers on the birds chin and neck, as well as the way the beak is parted a little bit. And of course I cannot forget the round eye with that hint of glint. Very good close-up with great details. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy your day.
Kind regards
Anna

Hi Ulla,
Stunning shot of this friarbird, they are regular visitors to the garden; this little guy really stands out well against that stunning blue sky, well seen, all the best Cheers Rick :)

What an unusual little bird - sweet little thing. Lovely POV and great colors and lighting. Well done!

What an amazing capture - these guys are so difficult to get to stay still, so to be able to get such a sharp focus, with the beautiful yellow under the beak, from 10 metres away, hand held is a feat - well done.

Such a beautiful background blue backdrop and composition with the leaves too - tfs.
Best,
Janina

Hi Ulla

A delightful capture of this little Friarbird. It must be a combination of the full-on POF of this bird with the interesting expression on its face, the bright blue sky, the colourful flowers, and the vivid unsullied greens of the new leaves that gives this photo a real sparkle that is very pleasant on the eye.

I like how you used the foliage to bring some added interest into the composition. The colours are strong, the details are sharp, and the exposure was spot-on.

Well done and TFS.

Loot

Hi Ulla
Superb shot of this bird in its natural surroundings. The colours are brilliant and the details are very sharp.
I could not help noticing how much this bird resembles the Cape Sugarbird found only in the extreme south of South Africa (I have previously posted a photo on TN that you can compare it to). TFS.

Hello Ulla,
such a beautiful shot of this bird. Blue sky background is marvellous. The great clarity and sharpness is the great stunning impact to this photo.
Well composed with the branch and leaves and flower too.
Excellent shot.

Regards,
Foozi.

NB: The insect that you asked about did not smell when touched. I,ve touched it. But some say when really irritated it gives a kind of gas that is a bit smelly and sharp.
