White-faced Heron - Egretta novaehollandiae

Today I’m posting another bird and it’ll be my last post from our Australia trip.

“This Heron, not to be mistaken for the Grey Heron, is a common bird throughout most of Australasia, including New Guinea, the islands of Torres Strait, Indonesia, New Zealand, the islands of the sub-Antarctic, and all but the driest areas of Australia. It is a relatively small heron, pale, slightly bluish-grey in colour, with yellow legs and white facial markings. It can be found almost anywhere near shallow water, fresh or salt, and although it is prompt to depart the scene on long, slow-beating wings if disturbed, it will boldly raid suburban fish ponds.
Breeding takes place in the spring, mostly in southern Australia, and birds disperse for long distances at other times of year. The nest is an untidy shallow bowl, made of sticks and usually placed on a leafy branch.

They are protected in Australia under the National Parks and Wildlife Act, 1974." (Extract from Wikipedia)

Unlike most Herons this individual was not shy at all !! He was walking along the Marine Parade at the seafront in Manly, Sydney, looking for food while lots of people walked by! This was taken from a distance of about 4 metres with the camera handheld. It has been reduced in size and sharpened.

Hello Ulla,

Very fabulous composition of a beautiful White-faced Heron executed sharply in-focus under day lighting conditions. Also wonderful usefull information friend. TFS!. Grretings,
Bayram

ahhh there you are Ulla..posted 45 minutes ago and I'll bet Ivan is at it now. Well a fine post of a bird not seen by me very often. Certainly not in real life, but also rarely in pictures. I do see rather large Blue Herons from time to time...but nothign quite as this... A very fine image...clearly done and well noted as you like to do.You are very good as is Ivan in protection and love of natural things...Trek on!
Bob

Hi Ulla,
Magnifique, grandiose, impressionnant, si majestueux.
Bravo
Marie

Merhaba Ulla,
Thanks to you, we are getting acquainted with Australian avifauna better and better! This one looks like our Grey Heron, but a little bit on the plump side I think. What are those succulent plants I wonder, they look like mesebrianthemums or maybe a Carpobrotus sp?
regards,
Mehmet

Hi Ulla,

A beautiful picture and a beautiful Heron. I love the natural colors. Excellent details of the face and plummage. A cute pose sniffing the green leaves. You have composed this very well. Hope your skies are still blue!

Jane

Hi Ulla, beautiful Heron, great sharp composition with splendid colors, very well done, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

Hello Ulla,

This is a very nice potrait of the heron. The colors have come out especially well. If I may say I think a lower POV would look better for a shot like this. I can imagine it might be difficult to get down low and shoot before the bird vanishes however!

TFS
Ravi

This is a wonderfully detailed capture - lovely color and pose...wonder what it was looking for.

This guy looks way out of place! I'm sure no fish are to be found in bushes but I suppose it's an urbanised Heron seeing as it's not shy, so it's probably searching for a discarded McDonalds or something!
Anyway you got a great image of it!
The photo is sharp and crisp with a great composition and POV.
Very good lighting and nice colours.
The green plant is very interesting... I wonder what it is!
A perfect photo to close your Australian sequence :)
Well done Ulla!
Thanks,
Joe

Hi Ulla,

I've never seen a white faced Heron. It is a nice looking bird and you have captured it very well, with great detail in the feathers and nice bright eye.

Hi Ulla

Great close-up - I have never managed to get so close to one. Good detail and exposure. Good note too.

James

BTW We can grow the tree ferns I mentioned in the UK - esp in the S & W - C. Australis can be tricky, but I have it nest to the conservatory protected by others. The big ones are more reliable - they are above the worst frosts and we overwinter them with straw in the crown. All of mine still have green fronds.

Yes, its a local Heron here too, Ulla. They soon learn where to beg for a handout - and Manly is a very busy place with lots of titbits dropped for them. (Manly a great beach too - did you swim there? November should have been good for swimming)

Good shot and it looks a lovely hot sunny day there too,
Janice
