I took this is the garden on a rather grey and very overcast morning; this little guy had been waiting for the rainbow lorikeets to vacate the feeder before he would even go near it.

(The Rainbow Lorikeets tend to rule the roost when it comes to the bird feeder in the garden, except when the Cockatoos come in that is, then the claws on the other foot so to speek)

The Galah can be easily identified by its rose-pink head, neck and under parts, with paler pink crown, and grey back, wings and under tail.

Birds from the west of Australia have comparatively paler plumage. Galahs have a bouncing acrobatic flight, but spend much of the day sheltering from heat in the foliage of trees and shrubs.

Huge noisy flocks of birds congregate and roost together at night. audio link
Galahs form permanent pair bonds, although a bird will take a new partner if the other one dies.

The nest is a tree hollow or similar location, lined with leaves. Both sexes incubate the eggs and care for the young.

There is high chick mortality in Galahs, with up to 50 % of chicks dying in the first six months. Galahs have been recorded breeding with other members of the cockatoo family, both in the wild and captivity. These include the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo,

Hi Rick

Great framing of the Galah - the foliage is really nice and thr Galah stands out well. Good detail too.

I always think Galahs are much-maligned birds in Australia - and seeing massive flocks of them in the Outback is breathtaking.

James

Nice shot of this colorfull lorikeet!

outstanding photo - good composition, crystal clear! Congrats

Hi Richard. Lovely harmony in terms of colour. The overcast weather has enriched the details of the plumage as there is no glare.Regards. Klaudio.

Hello Rick,

Hello Richard,
We have tried several times to get a good shot of a Galah but with little success, even though it is quite common, even numerous in some places.
I would have been delighted with a shot like this, especially as it is so sharp and contrast well with the foliage of the bush that it is in.
Thanks for sharing this beauty,
Ivan

Very nicely done Rick. Great cooperative pose by this guy on the Grevillea. The bird and front plant are sharp with great colour while you've nicely muted out the background. His positioning on the bush is great and he's giving you the look. Very nice.

I love this photo of the Galah. What a brilliant pink fellow he is, Rick. We mostly see the rainbow Lorikeets flying wild in NZ, but only rarely do these pink beauties fly by.
It's a super composition, well done
