Graphic Flutterwing (Rhyothermis graphiptera)
Whilst I was traipsing after a wallaby in Daisy Hill, just south of Brisbane, I almost stood on this stunning dragonfly who was sitting on a twig partly camouflaged by the brown leaves in the background. If it wasn't for the 'graphic' purple color on its wings it would have been an unhappy dragonfly.
The graphic flutterwing is from the family Libellulidae, the largest dragonfly family in the world. What has been surprising to me is since I saw this little one, I have been finding them everywhere - which is a good thing because these little fellas are valued predators who control populations of mosquito's and midges (two of my least favourite insects for obvious reasons) so the more dragonflies, the merrier!
There are some really interesting cultural beliefs surrounding dragonflies, such as their ability to forecast the weather (in Vietnam) and whether they are sinister creatures, pure or signify courage, strength or happiness depends on which part of the world you are in.
Down in Australia, anything that controls mozzie populations is alright by me. |
