Hi everyone,

today i have a shot of a female Olive-backed Sunbird, aka Yellow-bellied Sunbird (Nectarinia jugularis) on it's nest that it's building.

This was taken on Green Island, on the Great Barrier Reef.

These little birds often build their nests around people, and houses, for added protection from predators, primarily snakes.

Recently i heard a story from a guy at an animal rescue shelter. He was fairly angry and upset, holding a sack with a snake (python) in it. The python had gotten 'his' resident Sunbirds babies.. the mother was flying around like crazy, banging against the window to get someones attention and help, but unfortunately it was too late. He was pretty upset about it, as im sure the mother was too.
He wanted to kill the snake, but came to his senses and realized that's life and it deserves to live too, so he caught it and dropped it off at the rescue shelter, so hopefully mum Sunbird can try again with one less snake in the area to worry about.

This one was living above the food court area at Green Island.

thanks for looking!

Hello Gethin, great story and great picture. Lucky you to photograph those nests, I have never approached one! I wonder what it's going to look like once it is finished unless it is finshed! Perfect capture, Gethin, beautiful light and I like that the bird is looking at the lens wondering what you're doing there. Thanks!

Francine

Hello Gethin,

Your sunbird looks brighter than our plain-throated here. This is a very nice capture of this small bird partly hidden by the leaf. Nicely perched exposing sharpness and details of the plumage. You also have an interesrting note complementing this beautiful picture in natural environment.

Regards,
Jusni

Hi Gethin,
Must have missed this one along the way; nice capture of this Olive-backed Sunbird in its natural environment, lovely colours and a good eye catch, amazing story too, one very lucky snake, all the best Cheers Rick :)

Hello Gethin

A very god job to catch this bird in a natural setting like this.
It blends in with it's environment but you managed to show it well.
very good POV.
The colours are very good.
