It was a bit of a wet grey morning the day I took this, very overcast and drizzling yet the colours of the Rainbow Lorikeet, and the last of the flowering Summer Red really brightened up the morning.

So if it’s cold, and wet where you are I hope this brightens up your morning too :)

The Rainbow Lorikeet is unmistakable with its bright red beak and colorful plumage. Both sexes look alike, with a blue (mauve) head and belly, green wings, tail and back, and an orange/yellow breast. They are often seen in loud and fast-moving flocks or in communal roosts at dusk.

They mostly forages on the flowers of shrubs or trees to harvest nectar and pollen, but also eats fruits, seeds and some insects.

The eggs of the Rainbow Lorikeet are laid on chewed, decayed wood, usually in a hollow limb of a eucalypt tree. Both sexes prepare the nest cavity and feed the young, but only the female incubates the eggs.

The Rainbow Lorikeet appears to have benefited from artificial feeding stations and prolific-fruiting and flowering trees and shrubs, including my back garden.

Details; Shot Raw converted to Jpeg cropped and reduced in size; I also tweaked the Digital Exposure Compensation by -0.3 in Zoom Browser. Sharpened slightly and soft border added for posting.

Hi rcrick,

Wow! what a colourful bird this Lorikeet.
Lovely light over the bird showing great details in the plumage and a beautiful well lid eye!
Very well done!

Lise

Richard, this is a very beautiful picture and not only because it has such array of rich colours on both the subject and the flowers but also because it is somewhat humorous in terms of the expression on the bird's face. This Lorikeet seems to be upset with the drizzle making it wet :-).
You have controlled the shot deftly despite the weather. The entire picture is sharp, colourful and well composed.
Thanks and enjoy your weekend.

Hi Richard,
What a colorful bird, colorful flower, and colorful image altogether. I have seen rainbow lorikeets in aviaries, but it is hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that these incredible birds fly free in nature in other parts of the world.
Gorgeous colors and excellent composition.
TFS. : )

A beautifully colorful bird on a finely colored flower group Richard, both captured in good focus and fine detail against a rainy BG. Terrific job, my friend!
Mehmet

Hello Richard really amazing colours, you are so lucky to have such variety where you are. Excellent detail considering the relatively slow shutter speed. I like the rain drops you caught adds to the image. The flower almost competes in attention as it also is a beauty. well captured rgds Necip

Hi Rick,
Even if the weather was cloudy and rainy, this is a colorful post indeed! Both the bird and flower has those wonderful colors. I like this pose you captured and good composition. I also like the effect of rain falling. The shutter speed you used was a little slow I think as I have the impression that the bird cold have been sharper; it seems to me it has moved a little. Anyway, this is a nice capture and TFS!

Hi Rick, the composition is excellent, with very good colour and detail, but on top of this a couple of things really stand out for me in this shot. First is the expression on the Lorikeet. I didn't think they could have expressions, but this one seems to with the partially opened beak and the raised feathers. The second thing is the rain itself. They're faint, but I count 6 streaks of falling rain, which really set the mood in the shot (along with the ruffled feathers of course). At 1/80 of a second, you've caught it perfectly.

Thanks, John

Hello Richard,
