The image of this Tawny Frogmouth was captured at Walkabout Creek, The Gap in Brisbane.
Although it resembles an owl, it is not, being in a different order. Common in open forest and urban areas of Australia, it is a nocturnal bird although it can sometimes be seen during the day in pairs where they camouflage well on rough, bare, eucalypt branches. It feeds on mice, centipedes, snails and insects taken from the ground. To defend itself from an intruder, it puffs out its feathers in a demonstration of bluff.
However the Tawny Frogmouths we saw could only be described as sleepy and cute. |
