Hi everyone,

today, i have another Ibis for you.. An Australian White Ibis (Threskiornis molucca) in flight.

These guys are one of the most common birds around Brisbane. They are considered a pest here, invading eating areas by the dozen. They are the whole reason behind the many "DO NOT FEED THE IBIS" signs that can be found around the place.

I find them a great subject to practice on since they are so plentiful. Especially for practicing in-flight shots. Find their morning or evening flight path and you can witness hundreds, possibly thousands flying to their destination, often in large "V" shapes.

It can be quite hard to get the bright white and dark black exposed correctly to show any sort of detail. I think i did it fairly well here. It was nice early morning sun, so the light source was nice and low, illuminating underneath and side-on rather than from above.

I couldn't tell you how many ibis in-flight's i've attempted (and deleted) since i got my dSLR in December.. this is definately one of the better results i've gotten.

Thanks for looking!

Hi Gethin,

Very good in-flight picture. Good composition, sharp details, nice colours and lighting of white parts successfully retains details. Good work, practice has paid off.

Hi Gethin,
very good in flight shot mate, very sharp with good detail and you've done a great job on the exposure too. I agree, in flight shots are very hard to do well as i have been finding out!
Cheers,
Paul

Hi Gethin
Nice detail on the white feathers and your shot is well framed. I think the poor old Ibis is quite ugly but I like your theory of them being plentiful so good to practice on!
Cheers
Sue

Hi Gethin,
A nice in-flight shot of this ibis. The bird stands out very well against the blue sky. Good POV and composition. TFS
Best wishes,
Selen

Gethin, this is a fantastic sharp in-flight shots of an Ibis. This is awesome. The contrast seen between the bird and the sky is great. You've positioned him perfectly in the frame. Very nicely done.

Don't you wish Sea-Eagles were just as plentiful? Actually I'd like to see a flock of the Ibis too someday, I've only seen ones and twos in Sydney.

Thanks, enjoyed! John

Excellent warm color, details, DOF, pose, and well exposed Gethin. The time of day is everything in these shots, because you must depend on the lights angle/direction. The early morning light worked out very well here.
You say they are plentiful where you are. Would love to have a go at getting an inflight of a large bird myself for change..
Well done!
Howard

Hello Gethin !
Wow, wonderful in-fliht capture ! You have perfectly frozen the bird, in a wonderful pose and with excellent details. I also like the composition and the blue sky as a BG, and of course the bird itself is very beautiful, I love this black head and this nicely curved beak. Very well done !
Valerie.

Hi Gethin,

You cracked mate what a superb in-flight shot of this Ibis, perfect blue sky, excellent detail in the plumage and wings, and with the tips of the wings being a little soft really gives the sense of movement, just perfect.

Cheers Rick :)

Hello Gathin,
you have a nice ibis species in Australia, a bit different in colours we have here. The flying is magnific and you´ve captured perfectly with great level of details. The light is just right gives to it a nice effect without "burn" the white body zones.
Greetings
Hernán
