A really big thank you to everyone who passed by and left a comment /critic on yesterday’s post it’s really appreciated, the encouragement one gets to improve is amazing, so thank you one and all, today I present to you the Male Bower Bird.

This was also taken on our trip up to the Girraween National Park, so rather then copy all the details across and repeat it please see the Previous Post for information on these Birds.

The original image I have posted into the work shop (so please feel free to improve on it) because I had a few problems with when I took the shot, even though I had set the Metering Mode to Center-Weighted Average Metering, (the subject was under a canopy and backlight), in the excitement of seeing one of these for the very first time I forgot to set the Exposure Compensation back to “0” and the resulting +1/3 caused the image to be slightly darker then I would have liked.

So I have tweaked this quite a bit in “Lightroom 1.4” something I don’t normally do because well I’m just so bad at it, but hopefully I’ve improved enough on the details to give you some idea on the amazing sheen this bird seems to display.

Lightroom details are as follows;

Imported into Lightroom 1.4 as a Raw file in “White Balance” the following was tweaked, Temp + 4, Tint – 12. In Tone the following was tweaked, Exposure +0.72, Recovery 100, Blacks +3. In Presence the following was tweaked, Clarity 100, Vibrance +5. In Tone Curve following was tweaked, Highlights -76, Lights 0, Darks +9, Shadows +77, Sharpening 86, Radius 1.0, and detail 25. I then exported as a Jpeg and cropped it slightly for posting.

Hello Rick,
Once again a superb capture of a Satin Bowerbird, this time a male. The technical aspects are great and the central composition is just right for the pose. The colours are superb and well managed against the OOF Bg. I like the violet eye.
TFS this beauty,
Ivan

Those subtle colors look great Richard,
Excellent detail/DOF and a great pose/POV.
Love that amazing eye too..What color is that..Violet?
Well done & TFS!
Howard

Hello Richard,
Very nice capture of the Bower Bird. Exposure is great given the difficult dark coloration. Composition POV and BG are all excellent. TFS Thomas

Hello Rick,
Wow, how lucky you are to have managed to capture both the male and female. This is a fabulous capture too and the blue colour of this male is fabulous! Despite problems with the dark colour you've done very well in adjusting the light. I like your POV and the turned head. Great sharpness too and a very fine composition!
Many thanks for showing this, Ulla

Hi Rick,
great timing on your part to catch this pose mate, lovely detail and perfect DOF too - also great PP notes too - well done!

Hi Rick,
this is a bird I know of as one of those critters that likes shiny objects such as gold and silver items and will "steal" said items away from you if given the chance,is that true about the Bower Bird ?For all your photo manipulation as related in your notes this photo looks very good overall. The only thing that doesn't look great is that band on it's leg but then again it is one way we have of learning about them.I like the colour this fellow has, blue is a great colour and your capture shows his colour well in this well focused shot with little loss of finer detail. Thanks for giving us this view.I am not much up on the use of image manipulation but with your detailed note,I have learned something new. Thanks for sharing this fellow with us all. Bob

Hello Richard,
Nice picture of the male Bower bird. It looks very different from the female. Excellent POV and pose captured.Plenty of details and nice bokeh in the background. The Bower birds certainly have lovely colourful eyes.
Compared to your original image, you have done a good job with light room.
TFS & Regards,
Smitha.

This image of the male Bower Bird is even better than that of the female bird I just saw, Richard.
You have captured the bird in an elegant pose.
The entire composition along with the curvy branch is highly artistic in presentation.
Well done and TFS.

Bellissimo ritratto, ottimi POV e composizione, buona esposizione nonostante il forte contrasto di luce, molto b uona la niotidezza e molto belli i colori. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hi Rick
I can understand you predicament on seeing a not so often bird.....and i can relate with the way you reacted..
Infact the use of lightroom ahsnt marred the beauty of this shot. Lovely pose of the Satin Bower Bird. Its plumage does look quite "satiny"!The colour is so wonderful and that rim around the eye so perfectly complimenting its real dark plumage.
Very well done.
TFS & Cheers
