[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
There are six species of these large (350mm), plump skinks found throughout Australia. This one is the most common, an Eastern Blue-tongue (Tiliqua scincoids), and as the name suggests all six species have large blue-coloured tongues.
They can be found in just about every type of habitat except rainforest and the alpine region of the southeast. In large populated areas such as Sydney and Wollongong, they can occasionally be found in people’s backyards, though as you can imagine, domestic cats and dogs do like to eat them. In urban areas they are beneficial to gardens as they love eating snails and slugs, so most people like having them around and children often keep them as pets. In the wild they eat a wide variety of insects, flowers and fruits.
They are slow moving and are generally found only between late spring and early autumn, basking in the early moring sun. This one was a most unexpected find in late autumn.
When disturbed they can inflate their bodies, hiss and extend their very large blue tongue.
These large skinks breed during summer and give birth to 15-25 live young.

What a sharp shot of this skink. Interesting animal. Good light and composition. I wish I could see his blue tongue out. TFS. : )

Another "newbie" for me Chris. :) A skink of 350mmm is a huge critter. Very nice details and DOF, exposure is spot on. Very well done.
