The Golden Orb Web Spider of Norfolk Island.

Norfolk Island (Norfuk: Norfuk Ailen) is a small inhabited island in the South Pacific Ocean located between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia at 29°02′S, 167°57′E.

It covers 34.6 km² (13.3 mi²), with 32 km of coastline. The climate is subtropical and mild, with little seasonal differentiation, and always warmer than New Zealand.

This is a Golden Web Spider.

We saw many spiders on the island, and the Golden Orb Web Spider was the largest spider species that I saw. They are common in bushes and gardens. They build very large and strong yellow silk orb webs which are vertical or slightly inclined. Under the sun their webs are golden in colour.

The Golden Orb Web Spider is a diurnal spider which means they are active during the day. The spider is brown to dark brown in colour. Their first, second and fourth pairs of legs have a brush of bristles on the tibia. The third pair of legs is the shortest with no brush. The abdomen is long oval shaped and is yellow with grey or brown patterns.

The spider feeds on insects caught in the web, and makes golden webs, and it was the colour of these webs that caught our attention first. Some were quite a yellow colour.

But it really was the spider that kept my attention – it was so large, yet seemed quite tame – never moving from the web, no matter how close the camera got!!

Hi Janice,

Very nice detail of the web and spider. Usually, the photos I've seen in TN show the other side of the spider. But, it's quite interesting to see the underside of it as well. I tried to get a photo of a garden spider for the first time last week. What seemed like it should be a simple task turned out to be very complicated. I haven't posted any shots because I didn't get any that I'm happy with. Maybe, sometime. In any case, your photo is terrific! TFS.

Nice macro from your trip to Norfolk Island, Janice!
You show the ventral side of this Orb Spider with fine sharpness in the centre of its web and the image is well-composed against a pleasing OOF natural BG.
Interesting to note that the island is rich in spiders: this must mean that the insect life is also rich!
