Plumed Whistling-duck (Dendrocygnus eytoni).

The genus Dendrocygna, meaning ’tree-swans’, refers to Whistling-ducks. There are nine species that are found in the warmer regions of the world.

There are two species of Whistling-duck in Australia, the Fulvous and this one, the Plumed. The striking raised stiff whitish plumes that stick up from just below the wing easily distinguish it from other species. Both sexes have these plumes, the function of which must be recognition of own species.

The Plumed Whistling-duck is found in New Guinea and Australia, mainly in the east. As it nests in tall grass it is sometimes called the Grass Whistling-duck. It feeds by grazing grass and small insects.

This was taken at a marshy pond by a golf course, well known by local bird-watchers for attracting waterfowl and waders. I had to take this through fence netting at a distance of about 25 meters (27 yards). After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was slightly sharpened.

This is the second time this species is shown on TN.

An interesting group of fine looking Whistling Ducks (they don't look like swans at all), which I am seeing for the first time Ivan, your correct DOF choice captured them all in good focus and we can observe their characteristic peculiarities from several different angles. Very good job my friend, TFS it indeed!
Cheers,
Mehmet

Very interesting plumes on these birds, Ivan. I have seen them for the first time. It is a lively gaggle of these lovely Ducks.
Well done and thanks for sharing the image.

and now if you only had one looking straight at you, you would have a "duck compass"...I'm sure you have heard of the elusive legends of such:-) Three of the four directions...hmmmm...it leaves one want to know the rest of the story..or perhaps to make one up..Very nicely presented!

Hallo Ivan,

You are showing these nice birds in a very good photo together with an excelent note. Birds are shown with great sharpness as you have got a high quality image. The pattern of the plumage, as described in your note, can be very well seen. Due to the well used light colors are looking fine and natural.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hi Ivan!

Nice bunch of very slim ducks :-) Not only their feathers look strange but also beaks have interesting colours. I like composition - these birds look very vigilant.

Ciao Ivan,
TFS.

Hi Ivan,

This is the first time I have seen these Plumed-whistling ducks. Those plumes are marvelous and so unique. I love the mottled beaks and the pretty eyes. Fantastic that you captured this quintet with the two in the foreground standing back to back. We really get a view of them from all angles.

Hello Ivan !
Beautiful birds again, I love the orange eyes and long yellow feathers on their sides, they looks fantastic. You managed to capture them with excellent details on all five of them, natural colors, beautiful play of reflections on the water, making beautiful patterns, and nicely composed. Very well done !
Valerie.

Hi Ivan,

These must be the cutest ducks on the planet. I like the slender shape and blade-shape plumage which you have registered well with your IS. Very good details and depth and very good framing from this down under trip. Well done and I like it.

Regards,
Jusni

Now, I see I missed your last two posts. This is one them and belongs to very lovely duck family. It is very beautiful and lovely species. Most similar species in Europe is Egyptian goose, except for their size. You captured them with great shot. Great focus, lighting and composition.
