Hi Friends. Today’s post is a new one for TN. This is a male Spotted Sedge-skipper (Hesperilla ornate).

This species is found through coastal eastern Australia, often in heath and swampy areas where its larval food plant Carex sp grow. We found this one in a heathy swamp while searching for the South-eastern Petaltail that I posted last time.

They are generally uncommon and localised in their distribution, only occurring between November and February.

Like most skippers, they are rapid fliers and not easy to photograph. I was lucky, capturing this one while it stopped to feed on the nectar of a flowering swamp grasstree (Xanthorea resinosa), whose flower spike grows to 2.5 m tall.

Hallo Chris
Thank you for sharing this tiny Spotted Skipper with us. It is really so small it is almost miniaturised by the size of the subject you have captured it on. It is indeed a beautiful butterfly with markings and patterns on its wings that is very prominent. The green leaf and dark backdrop highlight the colour and the beauty of this butterfly. The big black eyes is clearly noticeable and stands out well against the clear blue sky. It is a lovely insect with lots of admirable details. Congratulations for the placing the 1st of this kind on Trek Nature.
Kind regards
Anna

Hello Chris,
A fine macro of this unusual skipper, the Spotted Sedge, on the flowers of a grass tree. The Skipper is well portrayed with fine sharpness, as are the flowers of the grass tree in a pleasing composition.
TFS a fine image of another new species for TN.
Congratulations!
Cheers,
Ivan

Hello Chris,
Always very interesting to see a new species. This Sedge-slipper looks really lovely with its bl/w wings and abdomen. Shown also in an interesting pose on this grass-tree which loks quite special to me too. Great!
Thanks a lot, my best regards
Anne
