Flying-Foxes are a species of fruit bat. They are named flying foxes because of their fox-like heads and reddish brown fur.

There are over 160 species of flying-fox found widely through South East Asia and North East Australia where they inhabit tropical rainforests. The numbers of flying-foxes are declining due to hunting and habitat destruction. The isolated island populations are especially under threat.

Flying-foxes become active at night, when they leave their roosts to go in search of food. They feed on nectar from night-opening flowers, and many species of plants rely on flying-foxes to pollinate their flowers and disperse their seeds.

Photo taken at Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney.

Beautiful capture with good sharpness, colours and light. Nice stop-action.
Actually, I've seen one of these (or its cousin) fly across the road right in front of our bus years and years ago when I visited Oz and travelled on the Cape York Highway between Daintree and Cairns. An impressive sight ;-))

This is a great shot. Perfectly frozen in mid-air with great detail in your subject. The blue sky in the backround really contrasts well with your subject. Nice Job!

Hi Chi
I expect these are a lot easier to photograph than flying birds!
Even so, you've done extremely well, everything's perfectly in focus and the exposure is spot on.
Well done.
p.s. Nice lens!
Andy.

Excellent photo the detail is very clear and looks great against the blue sky. A really interesting animal - well done

Wonderful capture Chi Liu, good detail and exposure under wing, nice composition. Good work.

This is a unique opportunity. One does not see this type of photograph very often.

No way! You caught this so well, look at it - from the toes to the nose. Very RARE shot, especially as these are nocturnal. I have seen some of these in real life and close up and they didn't look as good. Also, nicely cropped/framed and composition is great, you did THAT as well as snap this beast. I am jealous.

it's wonderfull
everything is perfect,
İ wish, i would like to see that animal

This is an amazing shot, Chi.
Wonderful details while flying..

Great shot of the Flying-fox. I like the picture for what it is, but more for the memories it brings back.

I was at the Sydney Botanic Gardens in Sept 2001 around 6pm watching the bats wake up and start to fly. It was a very interesting sight and we were sitting on wall by a building deep in the Garden when a lady came out and said they lock up the Garden and it we didn't hurry we would be locked in for the night. We ran with her to the last gate being locked and got out with just seconds to spare. So, it is nice to see the bats we had planned to see.

Thanks for sharing - Bob
